What makes the Etch a Sketch so popular? It has influenced a generation of artists who have made a road for themselves to press; magazines, newspapers, and TV. |
What does 'artists who have made a road for themselves to press; magazines, newspapers, and TV.' mean in the above?
Thanks. |

First of all, "made a road for themselves" is not real common usage although there's nothing wrong with it. It sounds a little like a computer generated translation or something written by a non native speaker.
the term "to press" is not correct
there should be no semicolon (
the use of "press" and "newspaper" is redundant
Correction:
It has influenced a generation of artists who have gone into careers in journalism and telecommunication.
or
It has influenced a generation of artists who have gone on to careers in journalism and telecommunication.
or
It has influenced a generation of artists and has led them into careers in journalism and telecommunication. |

Without having read the article, I would interpret it differently. I don't think the meaning is "go into a career in," but rather "gotten themselves featured in." In other words, I think the writer is saying that these artists have made themselves famous--instead of hiring agents, publicity specialists, etc. That's just my impression, though.
"It has influenced a generation of artists who have made their own way into the press; magazines, newspapers, and TV."
It's hard to tell without the rest of the story, though. _________________ wintersweet
