Hi guys, I am now working in the States over this summer. I have picked quite a few English slangs and how they say things. Hope my English will be better by the time I leave. Well, I wish...
Thanks a lot |

Hey, welcome to the U.S., Miss Daredevil. Which state?
For the sake of arguement= What does that mean?
--Spelling: argument. Usually you hear, "Assuming for the sake of argument that what you say is true, . . . ." Also sometimes rendered in the Latin as "arguendo." It means, I may not think you are right, but let's assume you are right so we can explore the issue. Argument doesn't just mean quarreling, but also discussion of a topic.
Give him some saving grace=give him some way to get out of embarrassing situation?
--The saving grace of anything is the thing that keeps it from being totally bad or disastrous. Tony Soprano is a gangster, committing crimes every day, but his saving grace is that he loves his family and would do anything to protect them. To get out of an embarrassing situation and "save face" is something different.
in luck=lucky?
--Yes. You are in luck: We have that dress in your size.
sexual inuendo=sexual suggestion?
--Spelling: innuendo. Innuendo is something understood or implied, not spoken out directly. If someone says something with sexual meaning to it, though it is not expressly sexual in nature, it has sexual innuendo.
referred pain??
--That is pain that seems to come from one part of the body but actually derives from another part. The sensory nerves branch out from the spinal cord downward. Imagine the nerve in your right big toe traveling all the way up to your spinal cord, then up the cord to the brain, where you interpret the signals as warmth, cold, pressure, pain, etc. Well, if something impinges on that nerve halfway up the thigh, it will still feel like it came from the toe, but the real origin of the feeling is actually far up the leg. That would be a referred sensation. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |

I am working at a camp in Minnesota. But I was in LA for the Camp orientation. If you live you Culver City, I might have walked pass you.
I have some follow-up questions.
Could you use "for the sake of argument " in a hypothetical scenario?
And for "sexual inuendo" does that mean sexual "implication"?
Now I feel more motivated at improving English. It's very good that I can learn English without much distraction! |

Could you use "for the sake of argument " in a hypothetical scenario?
--Let's suppose, for the sake of argument, that there is life on a planet in the next galaxie. And let's also suppose, for the sake of argument, that we could travel at the speed of light, which we cannot even approach. It would take thousands of years to get there. So for all practical purposes, it makes no difference whether there is anyone out there or not.
And for "sexual inuendo" does that mean sexual "implication"?
--Well, the innuendo (spelling, Miss D, spelling!) is of a sexual nature, so there is something sexual implied in what is said. _________________ You live a new life for every new language you speak. -Czech proverb |
