I've never heard either of them. I think you have the expression "right-hand man" in mind. The "right-hand man" is one's single most important assistant.
e.g. "Deputy Paul is Sheriff Johnson's right-hand man."
I believe the expression goes back to the European Middle Ages whe the Chief Minister would sit on the right-hand side of the King.
