I encountered with a sentence below.

They vote for who they want to run the country.

I think the above sentence should be corrected into the following.

They vote for whom they want to run the country.

They vote for whoever they want to run the country.

Whomever is the object of the preposition for.

I think "whomever" would be the correct one, as it is the object. "They vote for whomever they want to run the country." Lotus explained the reason, but typed "whoever". I think it was a mistake.
