Ideas for monolingual classes

Post by johnck » Sun Jan 02, 2005 2:43 pm

Hi, i teach a group of chinese students, at intermediate level and as you can imagine it is quite difficult think of tasks that make it hard for them to use their native language. Whats makes the class even more difficult is that they are all there simply to get attendance for work permit reasons. Are there any other teachers there in the same situation, what works well for you?

thanks for any help :D

How many people are in this group?
What type of work are they interested in?
How old are they?

You have to tailor your course to their needs, but you also have to get them using only English. Pair work is good. Do surveys, info gap, reading dialogues, etc.

For activities that involve larger numbers or sometimes even the whole class, do charades, pictionary, or BINGO.

Don't accept a language other than English in the classroom. Don't use Chinese if you can help it. At an intermediate level of English, they really shouldn't need any prompting in their own language anyway.

the class size is usually between 10 and 17. the age is between 20 and 28.

I try to tailor the class to their needs, seeing what situations they need to improve their english in their everyday lives. I do lots of surveys, information gaps etc.

Just looking for a few more ideas that are good for forcing your students to use only english. Thanks for the reply.
