I am the new Academic Manager of a language school. I have lots of experience and enthusiasm but no qualifications beyond the CELTA. I'm doing fine here but my life would be a lot easier if I had access to some ELT management resources. There are no systems in place here as it's a new school, so I'm having to design everything - today it was teacher observation forms. The bookshops here don't cater for my needs, either. I've trawled the web for relevant sites but have turned up nothing.
Does anyone have any general advice for someone starting out in this position? Any recommendations for resources?

The first three books at the following link don't seem bad:
http://www.englishmaze.com/bookstore/b-elt-man.htm
That site was itself the fifth hit down in a yahoo search for "ELT management" (I opened that hit first because I was looking for anything to do with "Graham Impey", "Nic Underhill" or "Ron White" books):
http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=slv1- ... management
There is hopefully some useful stuff on the IATEFL SIG site (items 1 and 4) and "Phil's EFL Support Site" (item 3) at least!
Good luck!

Many thanks
Excellent stuff, especially the ELT support site - some food for thought. Cheers.
Advice for new managers
ELT management is very useful, as is Impey and Underhill - although some of that is quite UK based, so may not be relevant for your needs.A lot depends on the type of organisation you work for, in terms of what you are required to do. Understanding Organisations, by Charles Handy, is a classic management text - not based in ELT, but useful for understanding what management is and what is involved. Also, Management Masterclass, by Neil Glass, is a helpful resource.
