vocab notebook vs. vocab notecards

Post by tradang » Sun Jun 19, 2005 3:45 am

Does anyone have any opinions on the advantages/disadvantages of keeping vocab in a notecard system vs. a notebook?

A notebook is more conducive to writing a lot of information. I ask my students to write the word, its pronunciation, its meaning in both languages, and a sample sentence in their notebooks.

Notecards (on a ring is best) would have much of this information on both sides of the cards.

Depending on how organized a student is, either one can be made to group words in certain categories. The notebook seems easier to alphabetize (to me).

How they use either one seems moot. Both serve well for memorizing (especially if you fold the page in the notebook to hide the information you want to remember without cheating). Someone once recommended that notecards work well if students study them, then discard the ones they have already memorized, so they don't have to look at the ones they know again (and waste time and energy).
