Mexico Past and Present Through the Art of Diego Rivera
An Interdisciplinary Traveling Museum for K-12 Schools
The Ohio State University Center for Latin American Studies, with US Department of Education Title VI funding, has developed an interdisciplinary exhibit on Mexico as seen through the art of Diego Rivera to circulate to K-12 schools.
The traveling museum includes…
•An exhibit of 7, 24” x 48” panels (14 total sides) displaying information on Rivera’s life and work, a brief overview of the history of Mexico, and 12 large posters of the works of Diego Rivera organized by theme and accompanied by a short description. The panels are intended to be displayed on tables in an area of the school where they may be viewed from both sides.
•Folders for teachers containing:
oPanel-by-panel description of the exhibit
oComplete list of supplementary materials
oTeachers’ guide to the works displayed in the exhibit
oA lesson plan for an art project, clay suns (or masks), that could be displayed with the exhibit.
oList of Internet resources
oSuggestions for use by teachers who have used the exhibit with their students
•Supplementary materials including:
oCD of Mexican corrido music
oSlides of the works displayed in the exhibit
oChildren’s literature on customs, history, and legends
oVideotapes on related topics
The Center for Latin American Studies will provide the exhibit and accompanying materials free of charge to interested schools and asks only that teachers complete an evaluation and share with CLAS how they used the exhibit with their classes. Hi,
I just want to compliment you, for such a creative idea of sharing the works of such a wonderful artist. I have retired from teaching elementary school but did teach Art for two years and appreciate how the children are inspired by Art. I also used Art to motivate the children to communicate about what work they viewed and were creating themselves. New teachers sometimes need some guidance to create a healthy learning environment in which the children can focus on Art and all their subjects. I have written a book for new teacher called BrandNewTeacher, in which I can be their personal guide to do just that. Hope you will check it out. Good luck to you.
