Post by LLB » Sun Feb 26, 2006 12:30 pm

I am a new EFL teacher in China. I will have 4 test classes. One with 7yeards old kids, one with 8 years old, one with 9 and one with 10. I have no idea of their level :( . Do you have any ideas of activities we can do for this first class ? I will have 40 students in each class. Thank you!

See the sticky above on the large classes. There are many ideas there. Try to remember what you liked at that age and play those kinds of games, do those kinds of stories and songs. Sit in the lessons of the some of the other teachers in your free time and see what they do so your methods won't be so far off at the beginning at least. If the kids expect to chant and repeat, they are not going to easily answer questions or talk invidividually. Work from where they are and what they are used to doing to what you think would be more helpful for them. Essentially you are an entertainer with 40 kids and have to be on the ball to keep them interested. I think I would take pictures of their surroundings and make large posters with English vocabulary and then make stories from the pictures. You could pose the kids to make stories and so on. Then you could extend it to their homes, the town, a particular holiday and so on and compare it with holidays and such you know.
