differences between "general English" and "bu

Post by hy2958 » Fri May 26, 2006 11:55 am

I will teach a Business English course in a university in China. I am wondering what are the differences between "general English" and "business English?" What are the important topics that a business English class should cover?

Also, I'd appreciate if somebody can recommend any good business English textbook that I can buy in China.

Thanks!

Market leader
I like the useful language bits in each chapter (this is functinal language).

In company.

If you are teaching at the univ they won't be ex[ecting to buy text books.
They may also be expecting you to teach business studies, more than teaching any language.

In business English, typical topics are:

Job-hunting: interviews and resumes
Meetings
Negotiations
Sales talk
Common business documents: reports, emails, letters, proposals
Giving presentations
Telephone skills
Marketing products
Dealing with numbers and figures

But you'll still need to cover language areas such as vocab, pronunciation and accuracy.

Business English

I teach quite a bit of business English and I've put a fair amount of resources on the Website: http://www.jamesabela.co.uk/bus/index.htm

The grammar is basically the same, but they expect to see business documents and business scenarios.
