Volunteer to paid position: Fastest way in Texas?
Wonderful website. I've learned a lot from reading your posts. About a year ago, I went through a training course and started tutoring adults as an ESL volunteer in Austin, TX. I love the work. After each session, I thank my students for their participation. It's truly an honor to teach them. I enjoy preparing the lessons as well as the actual teaching. Now I'm excited and want to pursue a career in the field. In Texas, what's the fastest way to transition from volunteer work to a paid position? Is there a person or group I should talk to? Thanks for your help!
Hi ESL Enthusiast,
I've walked the same walks that you are walking right now. After moving to the US, I started out as a volutneer ESL teacher and as soon as I got my work permit, I let the orgainziation I was working for know that I was available for any ESL openings they might have. Within a week I got a job! So, just let the school/organization you are working for know what your plans are. If they don't have an opening right now, make sure that you drop them a line every so often to remind them that you are still around and that you are just as interested as you were before. You can also ask the director of the ESL program you are volunteering for to give you some contact names.

Thanks, Stromfi! Excellent advice. It was good to hear how fast you were able to begin working in a paid position. I appreciate your letting me know that you've been in the same place. Makes my walk a bit easier.
Thanks again for your help. Tuesday morning, I will do just you suggested.
