How often should I correct?
Hello! I am just wondering about what is an appropriate level of correction for students. Should we correct every mistake or just obvious ones, or just ones that pertain to the lesson topic? Any thoughts on this and how we should correct would be appreciated. Thank-you very much!
sometimes
I usually correct when meaning is breaking down... in the form of "you mean ..." and sayback to them what I think they mean.
I sometimes listen and give 5 minutes at the end of the lesson to give some general advice... so the student doesn't feel singled out. I hate to correct when they are standing, it's bad enough right? And too much correction breaks down the flow of thought.
Correcting to the whole class and giving the correct stucture is better becuase it's likley that many of the students will be making similar mistakes.

Maybe it is good to correct the students when the mistake is made by most of them or when the meanings of the context are badly interrupted. It is really not necessary to correct the students as long as they are wrong, because frequent interruptions will make the students nevous and they will have no confidence to answer your questions next time.
