Hi every body, I am intending to do a research in applied linguistics. I would ask please about the newest and hotest topics in applied linguistics. Actually, I prefer if I can conduct the topics you suggested ( an empirical research). so could you please help with topics wither in psycholinguistics or sociolinguistics?
thanks in advance
Regards

Sara, try not to take this the wrong way but people often post on this forum asking to be told what to research and they rarely, if ever, get a reply. Finding a suitable topic is (a) a personal decision and (b) something budding reseachers should really be doing for themselves. If you need guidance, your (ex-) tutor at university will probably be a more suitable person to ask.
Oh, and posting in bold or in large green letters doesn't help your cause either.

You could start by researching your own ignorance of English grammar, spelling, collocation, lexis and punctuation.

You could start with capital letters and punctuation. Then, when you have reached the level of a Junior High student, you could continue with a High School Certificate.

Stephen Jones, could you be more polite when you talk to others??Please notice that people in this forum are from different linguistic backgrounds. Hence, you should encourage rather than discourage them.

THough I dont think I can come up with a topic for your research, I just wanted to say that I agree Stephen was being a jackass.
I would also like to mention (Stephen) that even though we might all be employed in a discourse community that generally uses Academic English, this is the internet which --even if you were not a non-native speaker of English-- it is much more informal.

Sara 2 can't write grammatical English, can't spell and can't punctuate, yet she wants to do 'a (sic) research into the newest and hotest(sic).
If I wrote that I was a bit wonky about linear algebra or calculus but I wanted to do research into the cutting edge of string theory, I would be laughed out of court.
Now, if the OP intends to do the research in her own language but is asking for advice from speakers of English, that is fine and I would be more than willing to make a few suggestions, but she has not made the case.
Stephen Jones, could you be more polite when you talk to others??
One of two things: either you can write, spell and punctuate English but can't be 'arsed, in which case you are the one who is being ill-mannered and inconsiderate, or your posts reflect your true ability in English, in which case you have no business doing post-graduate research in it.

Being 'informal' is not the same as being ungrammatical, spelling badly, and not punctuating.
And there is no such place as the 'internet'. The fact that something is communicated through the internet or in print form is no more relevant than whether it is written on A4 or Basildon Bond writing paper.
What does happen is that certain dimwits, take advantage of the fact that they are hiding behind pseudonyms to avoid taking the minimum care over elementary rules of English prose style.

in which case it you
Is that what you called "the minimum care over elementary rules of English prose style"? By the way, my topic is devoted to those people who can offer help and respect others. If you claim Stephen Jones that I can not write or spell, then give me at least one correct sentence in Arabic ( following the proper Arabic grammer, spelling, and punctuation)?!

I am sure he would go and try to look one up somewhere.
People like Stephen Jones give English speakers a bad name. English is undoubtedly one of --if not the-- most difficult languages to learn. I would hope that everyone here, minus obviously Stephen, would understand the complexities of it as ESL teachers. I can only imagine what type of teacher he would make with his, as Paulo Freire would call it "banking" type of teaching. The "why can't you do it perfectly" attitude. There has to be a respect for people who are multilingual. I know when I am speaking a language other than English I do not have the same sophistication, diction, voice, tone, and what I do say is not always perfect. Does that give people the right to act like they are better than me? Luckily I have only run into one person like Stephen Jones, most people are understanding, respectful, and helpful.
So I guess I wonder, what makes Stephen so special that he doesnt have to be any of the three?
Sarah, once again I wish I could help you find the answer to your topic, but perhaps it is time to let this one die, and to try again, and hopefully this time you wont have someone trying to make themself feel good by trying to make you feel bad.

Typos and English mistakes notwithstanding, I don't think people seriously interested in carrying out research should come here and basically say "tell me what to research and I'll do it". If someone who can't find out the "hottest topics" for themselves isn't going to be much cop as a researcher, in my opinion.
What serious researchers do is read the relevant journals to find out what the latest thinking is, not post a message on a bulletin board.

I would like to come to Stephen's defence here and up the ante. Everything about Sara's first post suggests to me that this is in fact a troll. It would appear to have had the required effect.
Please do not feed the trolls.
