Reading Activities

What is the purpose of reading activities? Do you think students subconsciously acquire grammatical rules when they read, or are reading activities conducted only to improve reading skills and comprehension?

I am sure I heard a teacher saying that the best way to improve your vocabulary and spelling was by reading.

reading activities

Hi, everyone!
I noticed the topic , and am interested in it very much for I have ever been a teacher of intensive and extensive reading teacher. We all know that reading is very important in our life. As for our native language, usually we have no problem in reading kinds of materials except for some materials in specific fields. So in our reading in the native language, we will not pay attention to the grammar or sentence structure or something like that. The most crucial thing is that we should get the information from reading, so the purpose of reading should be the information-oriened.
Of course, for the language learning, we make use of reading to achieve the purpose of access to language materials. Therefore, we want to improve the reading skills of the students, to improve their language proficiency, say, reading comprehension, to reinforcement the vocabulary and enlarge it, even to get familiar with the gramatical rules, etc.
So in my opinion, we have to design differents tasks to realize different purposes. Hoping that we could use one piece of material to achieve all the purposes is impossible. perhaps sometimes we should focus on the content, sometimes the grammar, sometimes the reading skills ,and so on. It doesn't mean we just train one thing at a time, I just think we should emphasize one thing or two at one time, then we could make the material easilier be accepted and also our teaching does not seem tedious and without changes.
I just give my opinoin to share with you , and I hope we could talk more about reading here. I just find two messages here, could you tell me more views here or in other online discussion groups. Thanks a lot! :)
