5 new students speak NO English

Post by iluvjamaica » Tue Dec 19, 2006 12:52 am

This is my first class, tutoring students in ESL. I have my second lesson tomorrow night and am at a loss as to what they will actually absorb. Immigrated from Vietnam. Between 19-22 yrs. What works here? Thank you.

Berlitz system (aka "direct method") works well getting students from point zero up to basic conversation. You could look at some sample texts for beginning/elementary students. I recall one series called "Language to Go" that was pretty good.

Whenever you have a group that speaks the same language it might be a good idea to use materials that have been developed for that group.
Here is one series but if you Google Vietnamese and ESL you will find many books already developed. It is a great opportunity for you to learn Vietnamese and the students will explain to you in English about their language which benefits you both. http://www.worldlanguage.com/Products/V ... /Page1.htm
