Internationally Educated Nurses Conference

Post by M.Hull » Sat Mar 03, 2007 7:12 pm

Hi, everyone:
I will be presenting my latest paper, Safety to Practice: a core feature of language competency for Nurses at the following conference (where I am on faculty). Please come! It would be wonderful to meet other ESP teachers in this field. Educators working in non-English speaking countries might find this conference helpful to discover what happens to their nurses when they arrive in Canada or the USA.

Report from the Conference

Post by M.Hull » Tue May 29, 2007 5:42 am

Hello:
What an excellent conference. Sorry none of you could make it. Nursing and Language Educators from across Canada attended. All were concerned with the importance of safe practice in health care through language competency. It was really interesting to hear a common theme that foreign-trained nurses coming to Canada to work have a very different perception of what language competency in the workplace means compared to what is actually required here. For those of you who teach English for Nurses or English for Medical Purposes for health professionals hoping to immigrate here or to the USA, might I suggest that you please, please have a look at the Standards and Competencies required by the regulatory bodies, not just the NCLEX? Please, please? Just incorporate them into your lessons. It would really help. Thanks.

PS: If you'd like help to find these Standards and Competencies, just leave me a message and I'll be happy to help you out.
