I have just recently started tutoring a woman from China and I am having problems thinking of some creative ways to teach her new lessons. She is on a very basic level right now (can talk a little bit and understands some of what i can say, knows numbers and how to write the alphabet and certain words well) and we have done some work on the alphabet (pronunciations, writing them out, etc) as well as some other lessons through the Oxford Picture Dictionary. She is learning very quickly and has a palm pilot translator that she uses to decode worksheets, which is certainly helpful but I am kind of lost at the moment as to where to go and what to do. I tried a lesson out of the Oxford Picture Dictionary teaching expressions such as 'How are you?' and 'How are things?' and also introductions, but it was proving to be difficult to explain them to her. She also wants homework to prepare her for the following weeks lessons and I am lost as to what to do. I really want to get her to learn the basics so she can go home being able to communicate something new each week and I would also like to have her interact more through more creative or hands on lessons. However, I don't know if I am moving too fast or not going about the lessons the right way.
This is my first time tutoring an ESL student, and I was sincerely hoping that someone might be able to help me out with some ideas for lesson plans or where to go from here.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Need some lesson plan ideas for my student...
