			Hi all,
Is there another word/phrase for "direct translation", i.e., direct translation from one's mother tongue which often results in a string of meaningless words? I'm sure there is, but it seems to have slipped my memory.

			loan translation, calque
however I'd rather say word-for-word translation. Interestingly, in my mother tongue, Hungarian the word-for-word equivalent is "mirror translation"

A word-for-word translation is just a helpful teaching tool though, I don't think you really see that as an attempt at general translation.
I think the term needed must be written here somewhere - but it depends on the precise situation the OP is thinking of, they are all different.
