ideas for english "practice" outside the classroom
I'd love to help my adult ESL students practice their English outside of the classroom. Any ideas? I'm looking for ways to get them to interact with fluent English speakers in the community.

Hook them up with the volunteer bureau in your area. Ask the volunteer co-ordinator to put them in a situation where they will hear a lot of English. It is a win-win situation.
Of course, you can do the same and ask for volunteers in the classroom. Then you have more control over how they interact and the volunteers can reinforce your lessons taking students one on one or in small groups. I found that the volunteers ask their favourite students home and establish friendships that are very supportive both ways.

for my adult students, i have presented and practiced a real-life situation with them for a few times before i have them venture out and try it on their own. for instance, i had a script for asking for a certain item in the grocery store, and we practiced it and role-played in class until they were confident. they let me know when they were ready to try it on their, and it seemed to really reduce their anxiety. they were so thrilled to report back to me that the mission was a success, and that they were understood and able to communicate
