I have been working for a private elementary school since August of this year.
My contract states that I have insurance that is paid for by the school, but I have yet to receive a card or any documentation stating I am enrolled in a plan.
The Foreign Teacher Coordinator at my school is uhm.....not going to be a recipient of a Harvard Scholarship , and has not given me a straight answer.
Any accurate information would be much appreciated.
Thanks |

One would assume that the school would provide the basic PICC cover at around RMB1500 pa.
Why not suggest you buy it personally and they reimburse you?
PICC offices are everywhere and while I've never had to claim, the general service has been good.
Not all offices have English speaking staff so take a student along with you.
Your medical history should provide some excellent dormitory chit chat

I've worked for two different schools, both that provided insurance, and never got a card. Don't assume that insurance here works the same way you are used to. |

At my first school, the 'insurance' appeared to be more like 'the boss goes to the hospital and pays the bill.' At my current school, the insurance, supposedly, only pays for emergencies. No card in either case. I guess you are probably from the U.S. and so are overly concerned about such things. But relax. Fortunately, the medical system here is not such a mess as it is in the U.S. They will not throw you in debtor's prison because you cannot afford $200,000 to fix your stubbed toe. |

As one of the main holiday activities of FTs is travel, it pays to have something on you that states the insurer and policy number. |

I take it you have never had the pleasure of spending some time in your local Chinese "hospital". |

Sure have. It's a bit rough at times, but I was okay. |
