The school that has offered me a job wants me to send my original diploma so I can apply for a Z-Visa here.

Is this standard procedure and has anyone done it before?

I'll be sending it in a little over 12 hours from now.

Usually a copy suffices. Protect your original. If they don't accept your decision to send a copy. Find another job. ASAP. There's a lot out there. Wink

There is no reason to send anyone your originals. Ever.

It is possible, though unlikely, that the PSB will want to see an original before granting an RP BUT....you will already be in China under a Z visa at that point. Do not agree to send an original of anything.

Agree , it's not standard procedure , and not safe , IMO. What happens if there is a problem with the application or the deal falls through - do you really think they will send your certificate back ?

Maybe this is a translation problem ? ('send us your diploma'). I have always scanned a photo of the certificate, and sent that , it is enough.

Or it could be you are dealing with a new FAO who does not know the ropes ...

I dont have the two years working experience and I'm applying to a first tier city maybe thats why?

The only other original they wanted was my background check

They also wanted copy of passport and a photo of me for some application obviously.

My diploma is oversized and professionally framed. So, I would of course never send it anywhere. I took a digital copy and scanned it. I have never needed more than that. You can always ask your University for copies of your official transcript if you don't mind them seeing your grades. It usually comes with an official stamp on it which they love here.

Never needed the original diploma (anywhere in the world, for that matter) and never needed a background check (in China). Where is this place, OP?

I'm on my phone so I can't do very detailed replies

Its Beijing, background checks are now required via July 1 2013 visa law, as is 2 years exp.

Ive heard of people get around the exp requirement not the background check so far. Mines clean so im fine on that front

I dont see why they would request the original if they didnt need it. They got my passport copy and info its more tham enough to steal my identity. Other than "finding the paper its printed on" I dont see the reason to fear. I can get a new one from my uni for 50 bucks.

Please advise though I really want this job. T minus 8 hrs on the package

You have been advised by several folks not to send the original.

But of course you are free to do as you like.
