Do most schools not reimburse you until contract completion?

I've been reimbursed half upon arrival and half upon contract completion with two different private schools.

Being reimbursed on completion of the contract is the normal procedure in China.

I thought the normal was 50% at the end of semester 1, 50% at the end of semester 2. That's been the procedure for everywhere I interviewed with, save one who would give it all upon arrival.

this is china! welcome to china!

there is NO normal. there is NO standard.

what happens in choudou-U will NOT be the
same as at choubro-U right next door.

but good news, everyone! it's the land
of haggling! everything is negotiable.

you want flight prepayment? well, good lucky!
it won't be easy, but it IS possible.....if you're
a damn good negotiator, can trade that off
for something they want, or have some truly
delicious skills to bring to the table.

If reimbursement is in the contract, ihat's about how it has worked, or the first part is reimbursed a week before may 1.

So we could spend it all during Láodòng jié.

Here's 2 more threads on the same topic with the same mixed responses:

It doesn't take much to see why a lot of schools won't pay for the ticket up front or as soon as the teacher arrives. They've likely got experience with (choose from the following) angry, flaky, useless, alcoholic teachers who didn't stick around for the year. I agree with Voice of reason that some schools are in the dodgy category but provided the teacher has a proper work visa and fulfills their end of the bargain the chances of not being reimbursed are minimal. Not getting paid salary or benefits is usually related to not being legal, at least that seems to be the general trend on here.

The only Normal in the Chiner is the Normal University but Abnormal University is probably a better moniker.

So git yer application into Choudou Abnormal University today! See you at Choubro Abnormal University!

The "Experimental" school thing gets me every time. Have visions of Shiro Ishii and the Unit 731 boys running into class and throwing Bubonic Plague laced rat fleas in the faces of the little darlings during "Show and Tell" just for shits and giggles.

I get my flight cash twice a year in January and July. For the first two years here I didn't get any as I didn't know about it and it wasn't in the contract. I never bothered to ask after that but was told in my 3rd year that I should collect it.
