tell your overlords that releasing that information is simply unacceptable.

at the same time, you have to provide the solution.
get the foreign staff to fill out a form with the following:

english name
chinese name
nationality
home town
highest degree (if any)
hobbies/sports
outstanding warrants
anything of interest

fire up the word processor, format a nice display with boxes
and some simple graphics. and your digitized photos. should
take half an hour.

print and deliver.

why not do the same for the Chinese staff and add in some warrants of a colorful nature? No reason why the boss can't be wanted in 7 American states for bootlegging.

The home address problem can be solved by telling the bosses that you might be put in a position of being asked to give private lessons. I'm sure they won't like that.

Greetings,

I agree with Chodoudufu that it would be a good idea to offer a positive solution that saves face for everyone.

I also understand about the need to save face and I know that they know how to use the need to save face in their culture against Westerners. I agree that sometimes they need to lose face. Kind of like the old saying that you have to break a lot of eggs to make an omelet. In this case, you have to break a few rice bowls without getting fired or frog marched out of the country.

Thinking back to teaching in China and Japan, sometimes there are hopeless or ridiculous situations that reminded me of the movie The Bridge Over the River Kwai where the sadistic Japanese prison camp commander slaps Alec Guiness across the face with his copy of the Geneva Convention and yells at him that "ENGRISH PLISONERS BUILD THE BLIDGE!!!!!" I had more than a few days in those countries when unrealistic or unreasonable demands were made. The commands were terse. I always walked away thinking, yes, this is an English prisoners build the bridge day. Looking back, it seems I built a lot of bridges and was happy in my work.

Only a complete bonehead wouldn't have seen that coming.

A wise man Gao Ming once told me: "don't be so obsessed with saving face and being 'harmonious', sometimes the Chinese need to lose face."

Fewer truer words have ever been spoken.

I wouldn't mind the address being the school's address. Passport number is out of the question.

Maybe get them to replace it with your "official" QQ number?

Also, what is it like living in Urumqi? Is it worth visiting?

Urumqi is great in the summer. Nice weather, night markets, close proximity to the mountains. Interesting mix of cultures too. But Winter is really quite depressing unless you're a skier. The air pollution here in Winter is about on a par with Beijing. Definitely worth a visit in Summer, along with Kashgar, Yili and Kanas. Near Urumqi you've also got Turpan and Tian Chi lake which make great weekend trips.

Oh wow. Luckily for me, they had my old address up. But other teachers might not be so lucky... They still haven't put them back up so maybe they realised it was stupid and pointless.

We already have a simple bio up with stuff like that. I guess they felt it wasn't enough.

I'd tell them to take out the passport number, and replace it with your 'teachers' QQ number, but only on condition that they put something at the bottom to let people know that you are available for private tutoring and your rates are lower than Web Internationals.

Not to get off of topic but I got thinking about the poor female teacher who was harassed late at night. When I was at the Web we had a female teacher for a short while who claimed that on two occasions male students asked her if they could urinate on her. Anybody hear similar?

Of course I guess it cuts both ways. We also had a male teacher who stalked every female under the age of thirty. The girls were so scared of him some would bring in their boyfriends. It was easy for him to get numbers and such as Chinese feel very obligated towards teachers requests as you know. He would have them take him out to eat and run up these huge tabs whether they could afford it or not. Took six months for them to fire him, and this was generally a well managed school.

Exactly. I know a girl who had some freak follow her home to find out where she lives and he has shown up a few times since, pounding on her door in the middle of the night.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for these morons to post your home address in plain view of anyone walking in. Ridiculous. What did they think was going to happen?

You could play along with their fears.

"I don't want Xinjiang terrorists to kidnap me, please don't tell everyone my personal information."
