Read the article nomad soul provided. It actually gives some hard data. It is not like everyone in China has cancer. It's just a touch higher than other countries. The bigger problem is lack of screening, lack of well-trained doctors, and the extremely high cost of treatment, which leads to a high rate of cancer-related deaths.

Women are living long enough to get breast cancer...that's not entirely a bad thing.

Westerner's make way too big of a deal about the pollution here. Yeah it's bad, but the chances of it killing you are pretty damn low, especially since we didn't grow up here and most of us only spend about 8 months per year here, living in modern cities and drinking bottled water.

Are you sure that Chinese bottled H2O is really safe?

I'm not on a mission, I like China and the Chinese. All I'm saying is that those who want to teach English in China, especially long term, should be aware of the health risks, which are very real and very considerable.

If you've been in China awhile I can guarantee, 100%, that you've eaten things that you wouldn't have, had you known. Human flesh most closely resembles beef in taste, no one could tell when it's thrown in with a stir fry covered with la jiao and soy sauce. After all, you haven't noticed...

I did my homework, now it's your turn, you never heard of what went on during the Great Leap and Cultural Revolution...or even melamine in the baby formula? (apparently not) I'm definitely not trying to dissuade you from going to China. Breath the air, drink the water, eat the food. Go, go, go, you'll have fun (if being irradiated by gamma rays under a cobalt generator is your idea of fun). As for the beef, what you don't know can't hurt you...right? Yumy...

Obviously, you haven't done too much homework in your short time on the forum boards ... otherwise, you'd have noticed how many of the members here are ALREADY IN China!

I understand about the pollution, the risks, the dangers, the food. But why don't you come clean and tell us all about the REAL reasons why you're concern trolling?

Your concern for humanity is truly touching, your hyperbole and flair for the dramatic are impressive, but what's your REAL motivation?

Just because you can imagine something doesn't make it so. Take it from one of my favorite scientists:
"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Carl Sagan

Assertions regarding cannibalism presuppose sprawling conspiracies between food industries (butchers and shopkeeps), hospitals/morgues, families of the dead, government regulators - and thus require a lot of people to have no problem desecrating common morality and stealing bodies without anyone saying anything to anyone. This is an extraordinary claim.

Idly thinking about how much could be saved by practicing cannibalism is not extraordinary evidence - actually, that's not even evidence at all. (And really, the economics of maintaining some sort of widespread discrete trade like this, against what would likely be ruthless repercussions, doesn't really add up.)

In conclusion, while China is often unclean and unhealthy, this on the other hand is ridiculous. Let us forget about these trolls.
And as for the would-be trolls: "evidence or quit your yapping."

Total BS. Hep B is spread by a virus. Alcoholic hepatitis is caused by chronic drinking but is not infectious and is different.

You're just another yahoo who wants to deter others from coming to China.

Or are you the same person operating under a different name?

Time to flush this puppy, folks.

Round and round he goes...

No, he is of a different ilk than that one - in some ways actually worse. Blue, at least, would not seemingly condone or make light of cannibalism.

Not to flatter the witless MoFo, with the sense of humor of a side dish, but rather to answer your question:

中国通 Zhōngguótōng - China watcher / an expert on China / an old China hand

Well, if he doesn't like it, I'm glad he left. There ought to be a way to bar his sort from ever returning - and if China ever rules the world someday, I hope they'll exile his sorry ass to some assteroid somewhere far away.

I'm not trying to prevent anyone from going to China, why would I? The Chinese government estimates that at any given time there is a need for many thousands of additional English teachers, and besides, in my last 2 years there I got out of teaching and was working for Chinese manufacturers in the capacity of technical and marketing liaison--I was even able to accompany them to Russia, Germany and Singapore.

I would however like to see the quality of English teachers in China improve--there are many dedicated and professional teachers working there, but also way too many party boys and misfits!

I may even return, as I've said I like China a lot--but I would limit my physical time in the country to no more than one year, probably 6 months.

I only wanted those in China or planning to go to be aware of the risks posed by the degraded environment and the lax food oversight. Again, Chinese government statistics regarding the negative health effects are pure fiction--EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT.

The following from http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/05/opinion/chinas-poisonous-waterways.html?_r=1

"The entire country is sick, and cancer has spread to every organ of this nation. In our society, profit and G.D.P. count more than anything else. A glittering facade is the new face of China. Behind it, well-off people emigrate, people in power send their families to countries with clean water, while they themselves consume quality food and clean water through the networks that serve the privileged. Yet many ordinary people still refuse to wake up, as if they were busy digging at the soil beneath their own feet while standing on a precipice."
