I am considering applying to teach in southeast Asia with the British Council. I am currently teaching in Shenzhen, China and I asked some of the British teachers about it and they said that it has a good reputation but they don't pay very well. These teachers have not actually worked there, can anyone confirm this about the pay? Also, I have a 120 hour TEFL and they seem to prefer a CELTA. Would they accept my TEFL? I had to work very hard for my TEFL and as far as I can tell it is almost exactly like a CELTA.

For comparison, the CELTA is 120 hours of (in-person) instruction that also includes 6 hours of supervised/observed/assessed teaching practice with real students in a classroom setting.

I understand that, my TEFL is 120 hours and it included me teaching 6 supervised practice classes.

Is it the trinity one? Should be ok.
Other ones - 'it depends' is the only definite answer.
It won't hurt to apply.

I left BCHK about 7 years ago. Then it was ok money and job satisfaction. According to more recent staff it's been up and down, mostly down regarding salary (was 30K, now 26 or 27 I think). Teachers are younger and less experienced (because less money?). Management getting more pushy and expecting staff to work full day Sat/Sun and 2 or 3 split shifts other days (morning/eve).

The people I know there tend to moan a bit, but still stay for more than one contract.

The BC get £100m from the taxpayer. Their salaries usually beat local market averages. They are on the low side in the Middle East. In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, their salaries border on poor, but in Asia, they tend to be way above the market, as far as I know. Accommodation, if provided, should be okay as well. However, the thing you need to bear in mind is the government subsidy and the fact that they are nonprofit.

I heard that they got a zillion Interstellar Credits from the Intergalactic Council for the promotion of Standard Interterran.

Quite possibly, but more accurately is the number of BC schools which is kept at around 100 worldwide. If they're averaging £1 million of taxpayers' money each, I'm applying to be TCM of anywhere immediately. That's a lot of copies of Headway, at least that's what my expenses will say.
