What´s wrong with gay marriage in Limerick? If Patrick fits Gerald and Gerald fits Patrick, what´s the problem? Most of my gay friends are right behind the Irish q*****. Wink

Ireland have voted overwhelmingly in favour of marriage equality. It is the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage by a popular vote.

And in a country that historically and religiously has taken a very conservative stance in that regard. Truly amazing!!!

Begorrah - the Bishop will be deeply saddened. Very Happy But if anyone thinks this will make the Catholic Church sit up and listen, well, I haven't seen any pigs flying by lately.

John

So very true. Though, it seems that most Irish Catholics are choosing not to listen to their religious leaders right now, at least not on this issue. So in a sense, pigs are flying in spite of papal decrees to stay put.

And birth control is very popular among American Catholics. But deaf ears won't hear. It's not a democracy. Very Happy

But why should a popular vote be necessary? The Irish have a democratically elected government to take such decisions.

Not just Irish Catholics. Some of you might know this already, but my mom is Irish, and has always been fairly critical of the pope (especially Ratzinger, about whom she said some fairly blasphemous things). And she is pretty conservative in most things, but has not problem with not being critical. Mexican Catholics, too, pick and choose what to believe. The thing is, you can´t force a belief. You can chose to follow a doctrine while not believing. Nevertheless, I am fairly surprised, but in a good way, that Ireland is the first country in the world to make this a law.

Not the first - that was the Netherlands. The first to have a referendum.

But . . . but . . . then the defunct USSR should have done it decades ago. And North Korea? What are they waiting for? Very Happy

Congratulation, though - you're probably the first to call priest-ridden Ireland a "godless society." Smile

John

Which was, I think, followed by Canada.
