You're not the first to essentially suggest that the EFLers of the world Should Unite:-) (at least to some extent).

But it's highly unlikely to be a practical endeavor, unfortunately. This is partly an effect of the highly individual context of the majority of schools, and partly that there are simply no 'global' or even many international laws respecting visas and housing and etc.

Teachers are perceived as being fairly replaceable, so there's little incentive at the national level to provide support/benefits at any level above individual schools. This is likely also true in your home country.

This is a bit of a tangent, if you've seen the original speech you'll appreciate this one.

I prefer the original.

This is the original;

Goose-step has made us clinical, the good Earth is rich, greed has poisoned men's souls, we think too much and feel too little, we all want to help each other - human beings are like that, our knowledge has made us cynical, we cry out for universal Brotherhood. I'm crying out for Brotherhood, rather than being machines we are human, we have the power to make our industry a free, enjoyable, tolerant, united force. We could make our industry the best we could imagine. We aren't neglecting in imagination or intelligence, we're exploring the depths of humanity on global scale. In 20 years we'll look back and wonder why we didn't make more of the opportunity - an opportunity that has never been offered to humanity before - to create.

If you are crying for Brotherhood, then you will have problem with Sisterhood! Laughing
Who is going to lead the march?

I feel, quite strongly, that a sub-set of teachers able to enter countries to 'cover' for a few months or the rest of the year is something TEFL needs.

As I noted above, the problem is logistics. Visa issues, setting people up with accommodation, orienting them to students/school and etc. takes time. Many countries' visa regulations simply wouldn't allow for this, and few schools would be able to keep a set of accommodation and deal with the daily-living logistics of short-termers on a regular basis.

Plus it's cheaper for employers to either hire locally or pay their current full-time teachers overtime compared to recruiting, hiring, and flying in temporary instructors from outside the country.
