I have the following questions;
1) What are the highest paying salaries in China?
2) What is the cheapest place to live in terms of living costs?
3) Which is the best city to work and live in? |

1. Highest paying salaries*
Mainland China: Around 40K RMB / month**
Hong Kong: Around 100K RMB / month** (equivalent)
2. Cheapest place to live
Probably some out-of-town university / school campus. Live on site, eat on site. Not much to do hence not much to spend your money on.
3. Best city to work and live in
Very subjective. Best to target a few cities that you are interested in and do your research on them.
* Note that salaries form only part of an overall package. Accommodation, bonuses, various allowances, flights, health packages etc etc can make a big difference.
** Also note that these figures represent the top 1% of teacher incomes in China / Hong Kong. Accordingly, most teachers will be on much less. Knowing the top potential salaries is an interesting thought exercise, but also practically quite useless for the majority of us. A better question would be, "What is a good salary / package for someone with X qualifications and X experience in X region?" |

Good points Jmbf!
I will bite as I would be interested in some opinions on this...
So what do people think is a good salary/package in the following case:
- Subject related degree + telf certification.
- Three years teaching experience in China (elementary level).
- Shanghai |

A bit hard to comment as it's not a teaching job.
Seems you get on with your day and don't have to renew your enthusiasm every 90 mins, or lesson plan.
40 hours for 20K (less tax).
Shared housing can be a pain.
Is there an airfare component and do you get same (paid) holidays as students? Espec Spring Break.
Valuable experience though if you want to return home and work in a school as an international student liaison person. |

On another forum, you stated you have a PhD in School Psychology. This position is for a university admissions counselor, which is not the same as a school psychologist. It's doubtful it requires anything more than a BA. |

Yes, I do have a PhD but I am trying to gain experience which could possibly get me a step up to move onto another position. Most jobs I am finding at international schools want staff to have experience abroad. And if China allows for that than that is what I will do.
Tazz, you know nothing about or my life. If you dont have something useful than the suggestion is to stay out of it. |

Is English your first language? The above would suggest not. That would make it much more difficult for you to get a job in China. |

Is your doctorate from an Anglophone country? If so, it's odd that you're having trouble securing work in your field.
Regardless, you have no experience as an admissions counselor nor as a guidance counselor. Instead of focusing on EFL (which you also lack experience in), you should be looking for school psychologist positions via sites like Teach Away, Seek Teachers, Footprints, and Search Associates. There's also the forum on International Schools Review for networking and info. |
