A very tragic yet fascinating story that reflects the fact that while teaching in the developing world we sometimes find ourselves working alongside some rather unsavory colleagues, usually merely delusional compulsive liars, heavy drinkers, guys in bad marriages who need regular loans, etc.
I vaguely remember hearing of a similar murder story that occurred in Korea maybe 15 years ago, except I think it involved 2 women?
Anyway, I looked into the idea of teaching in Myanmar soon after all if the hype began about 5 years ago or so, and soon came to the conclusion that it is a bit too backward still.
This guy probably won't get too far but if you're in need of a new passport and identity, Bangkok is a reportedly a very good place to go. |

What a terrible tragedy? I don't think this would have happened in the"Land of Smiles"! |

Apparently, he hasn't been caught yet. Maybe headed to Cambodia, where the border is said to be porous.

There is occasional farang on farang violence and murders, but I can't recall any involving teachers. Plenty of high profile murders and assaults on farangs committed by the locals, of course.
Anyway, this place now has two vacant positions if you are looking for work. |

It seems likely that they should be able to get a bead on his location using metadata from the photo.
Apparently Interpol is looking for him so if he wants to run, he's got his work cut out for him. As mentioned in the article, turning himself in would be the best thing. |

He's still not been found?
Is he holed up in some northern Thai village with a Groucho Marx moustache and glasses style disguise? |

Yes, it's been a month and they don't seem to be doing a very good job, and you get the feeling that the guy is a bit sly in a "Catch-Me-If-You-Can" way. Of course, Interpol probably doesn't make announcements of any leads or information that might aid the fugitive.
Apparently, the 'fled to Thailand' theory mat be a red herring, or he entered Thailand under an assumed name somehow:
Scots suspect in Myanmar murder did NOT flee to Thailand
POLICE believe a Scots teacher on the run after being accused of murder in Myanmar is not hiding out in Thailand as initially suspected.

...Thai police have now revealed that the suspect has not entered their country since mid-October, before Mr Ferguson's death.
Deputy national police spokesman, Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen, said: "Binotti left Thailand in mid-October. We have no record of him re-entering Thailand after that incident.
"If we receive a request from Myanmar police we will happily assist."
The revelation came as it emerged British police have been drafted in to support Interpol in the international hunt for Binotti. |
Also, one reader (Jeff Clarke) comments:
"The Thai police are saying the suspect on the run did not enter Thailand legally. The border between Burma & Thailand is 1300 miles in length & is notoriously porous."
That another possibility, or he may still be hiding in Myanmar, up in the mountains and jungle.
They should be looking for his girlfriend, Elsie Devolder, as well. |

It was reported that he updated his Facebook profile photo sometime after the event. Shouldn't they be able to tell his general location from that, maybe it was via a vpn!
He could even be posting on Daves! |

If he is in Scotland then there is no fear of him ever being convicted.
There is no extradition treaty between the UK and Myanmar.
Even if the Myanmar government makes a request for him to be returned it won't happen since the death penalty is required for murder in Myanmar and the UK won't extradite a person to face a death sentence.
There is no chance of him being convicted in the UK for an extraterritorial murder since the evidence provided by Myanmar would never stand up to "guilt beyond reasonable doubt".
He literally got away with murder.
