hi everyone,
well, I landed in Taipei last week and started looking for jobs the past couple of days. So far, the only person to get back to me was for a job somewhere on a remote island.
I have a Trinity cert TESOL and 2 year college diploma (no BA). I have some random teaching experience but nothing big.
I am Canadian but my name is Indian - my dad is from India.
now what the bleep am I doing wrong? My girlfriend found a job without even looking, it just fell on her lap and it pays super well. The only person who wanted to interview me here in Taipei was for a part time job and they wouldn't give me an ARC. I have a 30 day visa, so I need to get an ARC if I'm going to stay.
thanks for the help. |

Hit the streets man. Walk in to every school you see. Practice doing your demo and bone up on your negotiation skills. Treat looking for a job like a job.
If u spend 8 hours canvassing Taipei, you'll have 5 offers.
However, you may experience some difficulty withy the ARC. You, imho, don't meet the requirements. Its visa runs for you my son.
I may be wrong about that....but, then again, I may be right. |

Yet again, Pop Fly is wrong.
As long as you have an English teaching qualification and a 2 year diploma you meet the requirements to obtain an ARC for teaching English in Taiwan. |

Only a 2 year diploma? Whatever happened to the degree rule? When did that change? |

My point exactly. At least I prefaced my potential misinformation with a caveat. Unlike other irresposible posters who fling poo about the web willy-nilly and hither-thither. |

A degree is required for an ARC - a TEFL/CELTA etc is not a teaching qualification per se and does not qualify for the exemption but get someone to check with your local Foreign Affairs police. Your only real option if U want to stay is to get a student visa and work illegally.
Good luck. |

A Canadian friend has a 2 year diploma from the University of Ottawa.
He also earned a TEFL certificate.
He has obtained an ARC through his school.
So, it is possible to obtain an ARC with a 2 year diploma. |

Could it be that due to his parchment being on UofO stationary, he fooled the powers that be, thereby being more exception than rule????
I don't think someone with a hospitality diploma from Mount Royal College is gonna get an ARC.....but that's just my thoughts. Alot here depends on the mood of the person processing your paperwork. OTR= Visa Run. |

It's true. One of the little known rules re: ARCs is you can get one with a two year diploma as long as you have a tesl diploma of some sort as well. It's less well known and definitely less prefered. But yes, it is possible for this guy to get an ARC.
I was in Taipei today applying for a license for my car. I went to the Ximen ding area afterward. I was in a back alley somewhere when a guy who looked like a bum (ancient scooter loaded full of crap included) gave me a business card and asked me to work for his school. If I can get an offer in a back alley from a bum, jobs should come your way with a little effort.
On the other hand, we are closing in on the end of the year. Not the best time to look right now. Also, you should have got a 60 day visa. A trip to Hong Kong looms... |

Yeah, I was a little surprised at first when he told me about his not having a degree - just a TEFL and 2 year diploma. I'd never heard of that before.
He's been here a couple of years now and hasn't had any problems. |

Maybe it's the use of the F word when things don't go your way. Just smile and forget about it. |
