Hi all,

My girlfriend and I have landed in Taipei and have been here a few days. The jetlag is still with us but we are starting to begin the hunt for work.

Just near to out hotel we have been into the following schools/language centres:

Wells English School.
Wall Street Institute.

Anyone have any experience or input on these?

Many thanks,

Shaun

I have heard a lot about Wall Street.

I've known 2 or 3 guys from the gym that have worked there and all have, over the past year, quit working for wall street.

A really bad outfit to work for all way around, is what I've been told. Lots of negative comments about the English teacher supervisors at Wall Street, actually.

Not going to write much here but the hours are quite high for what you get paid and the line-level teacher supervisors are hard to work with. A few older guys from the U.K in their 50s that are really autocratic and lazy. They've really pisse d a lot of people off apparently.

I'd suggest you avoid Wall Street and that you can find a better paying postion with a lot less stress and politics if you take the time to look.

Thanks for the tip.

We have just started looking around. I may have landed a job with Hess. I was on the reserves list as I applied late. Going to visit the school tomorrow in Hsinchuang (Taipei County) for a look round and get a feel for it. I am travelling with my girlfriend so we need to find out if there are any other schools in that area for her to work in too otherwise it would mean a lot of travelling.

I have no information on a Wells English School anywhere.
It may be a new school, a recruiter pretending to be a school, an old school that has changed it's name or very small in a remote area.
Get a real address, terrestrial telephone number and name of the supervisor or manger in Chinese if you want relaible information on that school.
Wall Street is a Franchise school teaching adults. They have a few complaints but have not been accused of cheating or stealing from their teachers, yet.
Below average pay and a lot of out preparation and support work is required of their teachers.
Please read this.

Good luck,

I think it depends on which branch you're at. That's usually the way with branch schools. I heard all the horror stories about Kojen, and only about 3 postitive stories, but I've worked there for the last 4 and a half months and loved every minute of it.

It's a bit of a gamble with the chain schools, that's the only real issue.

Typically, RPD has it wrong. There is one manager from the UK. He is actually quite a decent fellow. You'd find him at the Main Station Branch. The manager of Breeze is a nice, if somewhat innocent chap from South Africa. The manager from NanKing branch is anice enough American kid, but a yes-man, slightly sycophantic. Wouldn't do anything to jeopardize his standing. Comfortable and secure, far from innovative.

Now, the Panciao branch has a real wingnut running the show. A 60 year old yank greaseball who always tries to pick up the female students and continually uses "sex" as subject matter for his open classes.

Not sure who is running things at the ShiLing branch, but it is too close to the VP, the biggest damager of the lot.

The major ashole is the now Vice-President. This guy conned his way up thru the ranks and no amount of negative feedback about him has swayed the owner to remove him. He is from South Africa and if you have a head on your shoulders, you'll realize right off what a wanker this clown is. He is taking complete control of everything, and he couldn't teach his way out of a wet paper tiger.

As the others have said...the pay is shite...you have to work weekends....and this creep at the top should be enough to deter even the most desperate of teacher-wannabes.

And...you have to wear a tie.

Stay away from The Paul Street Institution.

I wasn't going to respond to this unsavoury character but over the last few days, considering who Pop Fly is, I thought it would be in the best interests of the readers if I commented on this shyster / huckster.

Sour grapes, eh Pop Fly!

You were most likely hoping that they would've called it The Street Institute of English Very Happy

Pop Fly, you've told people that you liked wearing a tie and how businesslike wearing a tie is.

Funny, you can't seem to make up your mind because you made the following comments last fall and had the audacity to attack other posters who had pointed out the flaws of the Wall Street Institute and the problems with management there:

Pop Fly wrote:
Okay....it's 27 hours and 3 admin. hours that are only in place if your manager needs you to do something admin-related.

...Don't forget....gauranteed hours....a schedule that doesn't change....a professional environment...clean, friendly....

But now, in your most recent post you criticize the Wall Street school for it's weekend schedules.

Then, you went on to rave ad naseum about the management at The Wall Street Institute of English:

Pop Fly wrote:
If you need some time off to escape to Bali, or to nip home for a wedding, then talk to your manager. They need about a month's notice before taking any vacation as the scheduling is pretty intricate and detailed, but they are a reasonable management team. You can have the time off if you want it.

Pop Fly wrote:
....but they (the management) are the best team I have experienced in Taiwan.

Again, here you continue to sell the readers on your high opinion of Wall Street management.
