| I actually prefer to translate from English to Spanish, and am frequently approached with translation jobs--especially by schools who are inclined to violate copyrights--but they don't usually want to pay as much as I charge. |

That's one of the few real complaints I have about my employer. I was hired to teach English, not to be a translator and interpreter, especially when the bosses try to pressure me into doing those things for free. I politely refuse to do any spontaneous interpreting simply because I'm neither a trained nor experienced interpreter. I did get suckered into doing some free translation/editing work in the past, but now I only take on projects that I want to do, and only if they're willing to pay me what I ask . . . which they usually aren't. I've found that many people who need things translated or edited haven't a clue as to the amount of time and effort involved; therefore, they expect to pay very little. |

I think they know perfectly well how much time and effort SHOULD go into a decent translation. They just are cheapskates.
Folks whose professional advancement depends on the use of translators/editors are usually more than willing to pay the price. If they aren't, well, they won't be advancing because of other factors--such as short-sightedness and stupidity. |

I agree with that 100% because people do it all the time. People always want to pay someone working for them lower than what they deserve for doing a good job. |
