Okay, so about a month and a half ago, I signed up with YahooBB to get ADSl service. I had some problems at first cause I didnt put down my full name on the YahooBB contract so it was different than the name on my NTT contract. This oversight caused me to swim through seas upon seas of red tape for the last month or so. Finally, yesterday, my start up package arrived with my modem and all the cords and stuff. I was estatic. I plugged all the cords in, got her all wired up, turned on the computer, put the software disc in and then go the little error message that said :
"Disc not supported on English OS."

What do I do? I called YahooBB and talked to somebody who knew absolutly nothing about computers or the internet. Ive tried to call technical support, but they also have no idea and dont speak english. Ive tried to get a friend to call technical support, but nothing happened there for whatever reason...
What shoudl I do?? Anybody use YahooBB??

Go to http://www.bbapply.com

I have YahooBB and you should NOT need the disk. You should be able to plug and play. This link will take you to a handy board where you'll likely get all the answers you need. Just click on "Support Forum" when you get there. It is run by a guy named Jimmie who also signs people up for NTT and YahooBB in English, so it's too bad you didn't know about it earlier I suppose. He doesn't offer "support" so to speak, but maintains this board for users to help each other. He often jumps on and answers questions himself.

In fact, I recommend him for anyone trying to sign up with YahooBB. He cuts through the hassle for any of us who have less than perfect Japanese or, as in my case, very poor Japanese.

Good luck - but this site should help you.

Sometimes they send out the hardware, but you aren't "hooked up" until a certain start date and you have to wait. Very odd. Yes, one problem with Yahoo is the lack or non-existence of English support.

Yeah, they claim to be the most popular internet provider in the country, have English advertisements and pamphlets, but provide absolutely no support...werid. They usually have english opertors around, but you have to ask for them and they are usually busy so if ya leave your number they might call you back...not always though. I think I got the problem figured out...just need to mess around with my configurations...

I had the same problem and Yahoo was completely useless. The English operators too if you can talk to one. They called me to ask why I hadn't hooked up and I explained that it didn't work and I asked 'will it work with an English Osystem?" The English service staff said "It should." The correct response is 'yes and here is how to do it' or 'no', WTF! I finally got help from a company called TNT in Nishinomiya who were awesome and got it sorted out, there was no way I could have done it without their help. I reccommend that type of service if you are not great with computers or fluent in Japanese as the price is definately worth it to save your sanity.

Thanks worldwidealive. Got it and am now using the internet in the comfort of my own 6 tatami mat apartment rather than the internet cafe.

Gordon....was in Pohang 2002-2003 before I came over here. Actually liked Pohang alot while I was there, but was about ready to jump of a building by the end of my contract.

Another option is NTT's OCN/Dot phone and ADSL service, which has AMAZING English support! My internet and IP phone service went on the fritz last week and I was able to get it repaired over the phone with their tech support- I talked to the same lady the entire time who spoke amazing English and knew A LOT about computers- even English OS. Same thing for their billing section as well. If an English speaker isn't available when you call, they take down your name and number and call you back.

When I first got my modem I had to go to an FTTP site and set the modem and the IP phone, so maybe other companies have the same deal...

How do you pay for YahooBB?

I can't seem to get any English support. I received my internet at the end of March and I haven't received a bill yet. Will it come in the mail? or do I have to contact them to tell them to take it out of my bank account?

thanks in advance,

Dominique

You can arrange to pay by credit card or by automatic transfer at a convenience store. The first month the bill will probably come out of your phone bill for NTT installation charges and the actual service charges will be billed separately.

I dont think there is any English service for YBB AFAIK. (as far as I know)

Hey Dominique!

You should get a payment card in the mail which you have to fill out and send back. Pay by credit card or automatic withdrawal from your bank account.

Takes about 1 -2 months to get the payment card.

I had no problems signing up.. All you need is the ID and the password they gave you with your startup kit. I was lucky and got in when they had a promotion and got my first 90 days free.. That did not include the FLET fee I pay to NTT though. I get a paycard in the mail and you can pay at most convenience stores.. or arrange for a bank transfer. My FLET fee is paid through my phone bill.

I got something in the mail from them, but it's all in Kanji and there is some sticker showing me where the nearest building is for internet access or something I'm not quite sure.

Was it really obvious in this paper thing they mailed? I have gotten bills but from NTT and KDDI.. which I thought were for the phone line.. Why two different bills? I dunno. My first KDDI was 1000 yen, 2nd bill was 5000 yen and 3rd for 2000 yen.. nothing about Yahoo BB yet
