I've been lurking for a little while now. I think this is my first post...

I found this site that Gregor mentioned: http://groups.yahoo.china/group/efchina
I went and looked at it, and it's just a few of posts from ef doses, I guess. It's not a bad idea, though. You can contact individual schools this way. They take a lot of flame on Dave's, so it should be mentioned here.

Are there any other sites where we can get REAL information about schools, or at least contact info, rather than just heresay from possibly disgruntled teachers? If so, this should be a sticky.

It was a sticky for 2-3 years. Don't ask me why it went.
Here's one such site: http://www.chinatefl.com/indexe.asp

And another: http://www.findaschool.org/index.php?Country=China

And the kinds of places you seem interested in: www.tefl.com

Not that I necessarily recommend them, but at least its a starting point.

problem is - that apart from setting up an independant inspector group - how on earth is it possible to get and correlate real objective information on any school or orginisation here - it's all heresay, and even a place one person likes could be anothers TESOL hell.
what we can assume though, is people who have a vested interest in an organisation, like EF'f DOS's, or those involved in recruiting, have an incentive to paint a rosier pic than the ordinary Joe - also the highly disgrutled also fill their posts with a lot of subjective clap trap - "fraid the best way of finding out is to contact those who work in places where there is a low conflict level - but these guys hardly ever post - nothing to whine about Sad

Your problem is - apart from your weird punctuation - that you succeed in making 4 mistakes in just 40 words of prose! Not just typos!
I expect better from my Chinese English learners!
But then again, this guy is here for the dough, not as a teacher!

Thanks for mentioning this Ultraman. Saves me the trouble.
I WOULD be happy if this was a sticky. In fact, I sent a PM to one of the mods about it, but I haven't heard back.

As for vikdk, I really don't know why I'm the only one who posts here. I never see other EF DoS comments here. I can't understand it, except to say that maybe they just don't use this forum, so how would they know? But it really doesn't matter THAT much. I mean, you could argue that I defend EF TOO much here. I mean, if it can't speak for itself and so many people have bad to say, then there must be some truth to the rumor, right?

I personally think that there is a lot of good to say about EF. But I seem to be in the minority.

But, again, what about other sites where you can get good information? Really, I don't care so much about EF per se. If it was a sucky school across the board, I'd say so and I wouldn't be working for them. My main concern - I swar to God - is helping out newbies. If they find some other good job to go to, then great. I hate for them to be put off of ANY school by naysayers with an axe to grind.
This thread should be a sticky, and it should include sites with information (not corporate flag waving) about Shane, Future School, Talenty, any chain schools.

Yes. I quite agree. Get in touch with a school or a DoS and see if they can put you in touch with any of the teachers there. Even THAT is going to be no sure thing, of course (see this thread: http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=32886 ), but it would be first-hand information, not just disgruntled teachers or someone trying to recruit for the school.
And, hey, DoSes (or whatever) for THOSE places - do y'all have a place to find contact information? Post it here. And, mods, can we make this a sticky? Pretty please?

Try to contain your anticipation, Gregor. You'll need to.

Meanwhile, just provide useful sites to the punters.

So you are looking for a list of schools that you can contact, and also a site that offers information about these schools. Well if you haven't already done so then you might want to check out the site that I am involved with www.buxiban.com as it seems that it is probably pretty close to what you are looking for.

As someone else mentioned, the only way to have comprehensive and up to date information about each and every school in China would be to have a team of fact finders out there continually updating this information. This is somewhat impractical and we therefore need to settle for second best.

What we can do is that teachers can compile this information themselves by chipping in information about the school that they work at currently as well as the ones that you have worked at in the past. The buxiban.com site hosts such information when it is offered to us and it becomes archived for future teachers who are researching that school.

Anyone who wants to contribute can post a 'review' of their school on that site or send it to me here by PM. Please include the good and the bad so that furture teachers can get a balanced view of things.

I smell something here. Good thinking and a rather suggestive site youve chosen!

And here are the EF DOS Gregor and Buxiban cofounder Clark. How intriguing! Roger is their blind dog leading them, isnt he? Dont loose your way, guys!

Cheers and beers
