|
|
| I am currently considering a non-ESL position in Malaysia. I have two years experience paying my dues as an ESL teacher in Asia. I am currently in a B.Ed program in Canada. I love teaching and I love travelling, but I also need to think about my future. I am considering a position as a business studies teacher just outside of KL. The monthly salary is 6,288 Ringgits per month. I'm totally stoked on the job, but translating this salary into my home currency is depressing. Is this a typical salary for an academic position at an international school in Malaysia? The actual salary is about what I made in Korea but could I lead the same great lifestyle and save a bunch of money on this salary like I did in Korea. My B.Ed is costing me a lot of money and I don't want to get burned on my first gig. |

Is it really an "international school"? If it is, then it's a very low salary (about US$20,000/year). |

|
|
The school offers students in Malaysia the opportunity to do any of the following:
- The South Australian Matriculation
- Cambridge 'A' Levels
- International Canadian Pre-University Programme (this is what I would be a part of).
I guess I made a small mistake because the students at this school wouldn't be foreign passport holders. So technically, it's not an international school. Yes, I agree that the salary is quite low for the qualifications/ amount of work required. This is why I am trying to get a better sense of how far this salary would take me. I really don't want to be doing the same job as someone at an international school in KL and receive less than half the pay. On the other hand I really want to live in Malaysia and recognize that those $50,000 U.S. jobs in S.E Asia are not easy to get. Anyways, SandyMcIvor I'm not 100% decided yet. It's a tough choice. |

20K US per year..hmmm.
Theres a lot of variables to factor in i.e., benifits, holidays and of course cost of living as you already stated.
Finding out should be pretty easy though. Try the local chambers of commerce, check out different forums etc.
I have friend from Malaysia and I asked her about cost of living and she stated that you would have a comfortable life with the ability to save.
But she is looking at it from a local perspective.
Sounds really exciting! let us know what happens

What would the tax rate be on 6,288 Ringgits? I'm 95% sure I'm going to take it even though the pay is a bit low. If I do accept I'll be starting July 10th and living in Subang Jaya. Anyone in the area?
Peace
