I am currently considering a non-ESL position in Malaysia. I have two years experience paying my dues as an ESL teacher in Asia. I am currently in a B.Ed program in Canada. I love teaching and I love travelling, but I also need to think about my future. I am considering a position as a business studies teacher just outside of KL. The monthly salary is 6,288 Ringgits per month. I'm totally stoked on the job, but translating this salary into my home currency is depressing. Is this a typical salary for an academic position at an international school in Malaysia? The actual salary is about what I made in Korea but could I lead the same great lifestyle and save a bunch of money on this salary like I did in Korea. My B.Ed is costing me a lot of money and I don't want to get burned on my first gig.

Is it really an "international school"? If it is, then it's a very low salary (about US$20,000/year).

The school offers students in Malaysia the opportunity to do any of the following:

- The South Australian Matriculation
- Cambridge 'A' Levels
- International Canadian Pre-University Programme (this is what I would be a part of).

I guess I made a small mistake because the students at this school wouldn't be foreign passport holders. So technically, it's not an international school. Yes, I agree that the salary is quite low for the qualifications/ amount of work required. This is why I am trying to get a better sense of how far this salary would take me. I really don't want to be doing the same job as someone at an international school in KL and receive less than half the pay. On the other hand I really want to live in Malaysia and recognize that those $50,000 U.S. jobs in S.E Asia are not easy to get. Anyways, SandyMcIvor I'm not 100% decided yet. It's a tough choice.

20K US per year..hmmm.

Theres a lot of variables to factor in i.e., benifits, holidays and of course cost of living as you already stated.

Finding out should be pretty easy though. Try the local chambers of commerce, check out different forums etc.

I have friend from Malaysia and I asked her about cost of living and she stated that you would have a comfortable life with the ability to save.
But she is looking at it from a local perspective.

Sounds really exciting! let us know what happens Very Happy

Blessings

What would the tax rate be on 6,288 Ringgits? I'm 95% sure I'm going to take it even though the pay is a bit low. If I do accept I'll be starting July 10th and living in Subang Jaya. Anyone in the area?

Peace

When I lived in Korea golf was out of my price range, but I know golfing in a place like Thailand is cheap. Would it be worth my while to bring my clubs? I don't mind travelling to the sticks.

Thanks for all the advice1
I accepted the offer

Get over there, he who hesitates is lost. Its enough money.
Get yourself down to The Royal Selangor Club which runs all sorts of sports and games and some of the guys down there will sort the golf thing out for you, especially if you can play rugby!!!!!

I would just like to add to this thread...I live in KL, and earn 4000 Rm per month. And I live extremely well. I find Malaysia to have the best salary/cost of living ratio of anywhere I have worked. That includes Thailand, and Cambodia, where I was paid in US$. I can do anything I like here, travel, dive, go out, buy stuff etc etc. and save. I have managed to save enough to have a big wedding with lots of overseas guests. On TV recently, Malaysia came top of a list of Asian countries for cost of living and disposable income. If I had 20,000 $ a year to spend, I would live like a king!!!!! Very Happy

Thanks for the reply micropiglet. I'm counting down the days until I get there. If you say it's better value than Thailand or Camboda that blows me away!
