I see a big fight approaching about a certain thread which seems to be upsetting some people. So for the sake of harmony and to promote a wider dialogue on current issues this thread hopefully will fit the bill. To start the ball rolling can I ask a general question about car insurance, in fact insurance as a whole concept .Where can you get decent cover for those important things in your life ,you know the car,the house ,furniture and protection for loved ones in the event of your early demise it seems that its hard to find or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place .Any ideas ? |

i think yapi kredi is reasonable

Doesn't the cost of healthcare depend on age, sex, previous etc? So if you do sport(like FOOTBALL) it would be cheaper, degil mi? |

Thanks DMB quick as ever ,I bow to your vast experience and your even vaster number of posts ,why do you get the time and energy to post so many ?
Before I click on the link you provided, one question,is it in English ? You also mentioned heathcare ,I didn't,don't need it my employer provides for a nominol sum as well as the state social . I will skip over the sport reference ,there is another thread for that .I was rather hoping you of all people could direct me to an English company based in Turkey ,just a thought ,I'll even consider an American company .There must be someone . |

It's in Turkish. I've been told to check with your bank. Garanti has a site in English. I don't know about US companies but I looked into UK based companies ages ago andthey were way more expensive than Turkish companies

it's a gift coupled with living in the desert for a while and too lazy to leave the computer when I have a couple of hours off. |

Great idea Billy , these are the kind of questions that need to be asked but are rarely answered due to the fact people live here in a bubble of xpatsville and know very little about living in the country proper . To illustrate this point the following questions popped into my mind . How do you go about buying a car in your own name ? Not a blue plate . Most people say they are a waste of time ,why ?
ıf a car is registered in your name and not a Turkish partner can you resell it back to someone other than a foreign national ?
If you apply for citizenship (some do ) at what age are you exempt from military service ?
Is it possible to own a business without having a Turkish partner and are we able to get mortage facilities from any of the banks in this country ?
Thank you for any non sporting or sarcastic replies hopefully I may start to get some real information from this forum at last . |

Might get the chance to slip one in here,so to speak .Ladies do you think having the sunnet makes the boy a man ?
I think thats a polite way of asking if you think the average Turk is a good shag ,personally I have been disappointed ,perhaps my expectations were too high , now where have I heard that before ?
So girls what do you think ,some of you, must have, at some time had a roll in the hay with an Ali or a Mehmet ,ratings please out of ten I can only go for a six at the moment ,maybe I should get out more . |

8 to 10. Don't ask about details.
Re getting bank credit, I asked at Koc Bank, where I go, and I was told that with a work visa, some kind of paper showing my salary, and a Turkish co-signer who can show his/her salary, you can get a loan.
I have always heard you can buy a Turkish plate car, but I would guess you would have to have at least a residence permit. I had a yabanci plaka car for a few years and I am glad I don't have a car anymore. It was a major pain in the butt to sell it, as I did not use an agent, and I ran from pillar to post for four days to get it done. If you buy a car, it is worth it to have an agent, believe me.
Hope this is helpful, ollie |

Everything from 0 to 10. Hard to generalize with these boys. They tend to get lazier much sooner though... |

So much talk of 'foreign' women and bedfulls of local men brings to mind a rather cheap 'joke' on a ME forum ... not out of place here then;
Two expats, one a teacher, are sat next to each other when flying out of the Gulf for their last time -
Female ; So what's it like to be poor again?
Male teacher ; What's it like to be ugly again?
.. Present, most beautiful company excluded of course ... |

Not really.
For car insurance yks cost alot more, but pays up without much fuss.
( wife works there and even with the discount it still cost alot.)
House hold cover is the same all over, around 200 to 300 ytl per year
Health depends on your age and level of health and your marial status,
sigal men pay more than married do ( go figuer ) |

1. You need to get a translation of your passport.
2. You need to have a work and residence permit.
3. You need to need to get an 'ikametgah" or document of address
The best place for a good deal ( if you can't speak Turkish ) is DOT
Doğuş Oto Ticarit they speak english and provide full check up for second hand cars.

All Turkish males who are fit and under 48 can and have to do service.
but as stated before. You must be able to speak Turkish and non native Turks ( ie not German Turks) must give up any other citizenship. for these two reasons you would have to be on sad git to be called up.

In short Yes. You need all of the above documents and you SSK wage slip a letter from your boss will help, but on its own its no good.
depending on how much you put down you will need a counter signer.
ANY MORE QUESTIONS. |

A friend of mine did his military service a couple of years ago and he told me that there were plenty of American Turks who couldn't speak a word of the language, and yet were doing their military service as their parents didn't want them to lose their Turkish citizenship. This didn't mean them giving up their US citizenship, however. |
The point for the army is not what citizenship a US, German or English born Turk has, its his parents ie his farther that counts.
If your dads not Turkish and you can over here in your 20's, your chances of being called up are still very low.
Todate if an officer wants to marry a non Turk he must get permission from his commanding officer and the General Staff in Ankara. |
