Love them or hate them they are part of our lives here in Indonesia. Speaking for myself there are times when I'd like to go on a rampaging massacre through Taman Anggrek or Senayan Mall equipped with a sledge hammer and a few cannisters of tear gas. Is it just me?

are the malls there still generally regarded as places 'to be seen / hang out in' rather than to buy anything ?
always used to amuse me.

When you've been surrounded by forests and cabins for months with nothing else you will long for them. Not just you. Everyone needs constant changes. Want to trade our place? |

I was in Jakarta recently, and all I did was go to different malls. There really does seem to be nothing much else to do there! |

So, one of us wants to throw tear gas around T.A. and create havoc?
Have you thought about making hasty exit after that?
You'd better plan well, as it always takes me 10 minutes just trying to work out where the exit is! |

Tear Gas for Senayan - clear Sogo!! Then beat them with sticks as they come running out...
For TA - you'd need your Tear Gas on a timer as that place is like a maze!! Whoever designed that place never had to get out of a mall in a hurry. |

I would agree. Taman Anggrek or Senayan Mall are the worst. Senayan is an Indonesian woman's shopping paradise. But for me--instant, total boredom.
Another thing that gets to me about malls here is the noise. Go into Bread Talk and they're playing house music as loud as any disco. What's that about? If it's too loud to have a normal conversation then I don't stay any longer than I have to.
Is it me or do Indonesian people like everything extremely loud? |

Going off at a tangent slightly,
in my experience just simple periods , even short ones, of silence drives many indonesians/ Jakartans into a severe state of anxiety.
i used to intentionally pause during lessons for about 15 seconds; absolute silence' wen moving on to something different and just scan the room. The faces of the students were a sight to be seen. it was like they just didnt know wat to do with themselves. sheer panic.
one guy quickly blurted out 'So wats next, sir ?". I replied "I'm thinking. Don't you think before you speak??".
He didn't reply, I remember, and especially from my last few weeks in Jakarta i can testify that , very often, the answer is .... they don't often think before they speak or act !

You'll have to speak up Wanderer! Can't hear you.
Just been to an action movie and hearing is now down to the level of the average local.
Gawd, I think a lot are born deaf. Speakers, car horns, birthday parties in the main street.
Years ago, folk used to talk about a double whammy wedding. Nowadays it's a 2 or 3 speaker wedding. The more speakers, the luckier the newylweds will be. They need a couple of semis just to move the sound gear next morning. |

Compared to living in China, life here is very peaceful and quiet.
You have to try it to believe it |
