I see that most of the jobs on the china job board require a degree AND TEFL/TESOL/CELTA etc. Is this the way things are going now? People need a degree AND certificate in teaching english? I just discovered that my Bsc Psychology degree isn't worth the paper its printed on and that's pissed me off enough. Now i have to get a bloody TEFL or CELTA too?!

A lot of places say they "require" TESOL, and even 1 year teaching experience, but generally I think that is more "preference" than "requirement".

I think that's only for unis. Private schools will often take anyone as long as they have a white face.

actually a lot of online degrees are worth just as much as any degree done on-campus. the parchment still looks the same and noone will ever know your degree was done online (unless its one of the virtual universities). whats more important is whether or not the university is "accredited."

Many bachelor's degrees are more or less worthless when entering the job market. Psychology, history, biology, and a host of others. They are degrees that prepare one for advanced study which, upon completion, can lead to very lucrative professional careers. A Psy.D degree or even a clinical master's degree in social work can offer some excellent job opportunities. A B.S. in psychology will land you a hourly wage job in a group home.

What were you thinking when you went for a B.S. in psych? Did you look at employment opportunities with a degee like that before completing it? Many bachelor's degrees are simply entry level training opportunities. Psych is one of them.

Teach for a couple of years and then get your doctorate. You, too, can become like talkdoc.

My boss here just showed me a government document that illustrates substancial fines for schools that host unqualified teachers. It then goes into Z visa requirements.. I think the days of working in China without a degree are over.

Kon,

Do not think your degree in psych is worthless. Particularly if you took courses in criminal psychology dealing with sociopathic mentality, your degree could be very helpful in understanding the administration and especially the FAO of the school that evenually hires you. It might even help you avoid being cheated out of money in the form of salary, travel reimbursement, and so forth.

It might also help you in your work with the students.

Good luck!

We have discussed 'F' visa issues many times, so one ought to be allowed to expect you to know what you are talking about if you use the phrase 'F' visa'...
BUt this time, you clearly didn't know how 'F' visas are obtained. The ILLEGAL ones can be bought in Hong Kong or abroad, but the LEGAL ones have to be applied for by your employer in the place where you will be employed; this takes care of an FT's registration! Note that an 'F' visa application at any PSB can be turned down.

wow Rog you so niave as to think I ment the so-called legal kind Laughing
Anyways half the PSB probally have false degrees - I know one policeman who does (a brother of a friend) - so folks don't sweat about degrees and Z's - concentrate on worrying about empolyers who don't fulfill contract obligations, and if you can actually hack it being a good teacher - now these are the real problem Laughing
