Hey guys, Well I am coming to Tokyo in September (wanted to be sooner but dnt get my degree till Aug!!)
Anyway, I know this Q has prob been answered in the past but I am looking for some recent info 2006 style!! lol
I will be on 260000 yen, accom is up to 78000 and insurence 6600 aprox! so that leaves 175400yen!! Really, is that enough to have a decent life in the worlds most expensive city???
I enjoy going out, but am not going to piss my money up the wall!!
But is it really enough to enjoy myself, buy that new top once in a while, go out with friends etc!?!?!

Rent I believe is GROSS so you will have tax taken out as well. You can live on it but you wont get rich. You just have to watch your spending. Go out three nights a week its easy to spend 15-20,000 yen. A beer is 600 yen as well as taxis fares etc

I cant really tell you unless I know what your lifestyle and spending habits are like. Transport to work will also be paid for. |

From the look of those figures, I'm guessing you are going to be working for NOVA (with its own insurance program). Bear in mind one thing...
After you quit NOVA, you will have to change insurance plans. If you decide to switch to the national health insurance program, you will have to pay for all the years you were on NOVA (up to 3, I think), as if you were on the NHI plan then. Yup, double dipping. It might be better to switch over now. First year is 2500 yen/month, and this goes up tenfold in the second year, but it's better than paying twice, don't you think?
As for living on that salary, c'mon. Thousands of us do it. Some save as much as 100,000 yen/month. Some save zilch. Depends on what you do with it. Go out twice a week to bars and drink conservatively, and you could eat up 50,000 yen/month easily, leaving you with 125,000 for phone, and anything else in life. |

Unless you were a poor university student not long ago and can continue that sort of lifestyle. |

I used to find I spent on average about 5,000 yen a day. I ate out pretty much every meal, went to karaoke a lot, went to Izakaiyas a lot and bought pretty much whatever I wanted.
If you're a party animal or heavy drinker you're in trouble, otherwise a good standard of living and a few big nights out a month should be no problem. |

This is one of the greatest myths about teaching here! The "as long as you stay away from the beer, women and ponies you will be fine" chatter. |

I used to save 80-100,000 yen a month and still have quite a good time. When I didn't send money home I always had a surplus at the end of the month.
Not sure how I did it but I rarely struggled. I think towards the end of a heavy month Matsuya and my loose coin collection stopped starvation. |

Cheers guys, I was planning on working for Saxoncourt/Shane,
are they worse/better than NOVA?
I really want to be in Tokyo, does nova place in Tokyo or in Chiba like shane/saxoncourt! |

| NOVA have alot of schools in Tokyo and if you request Tokyo you have a good chance of being placed there. If you want to work for NOVA that is. |

260 000 yen is not a whole lot of money and 78 000 (plus utilities etc) is a big chunck out of it. Lots of people live on this kind of money though. You have to remember that it's a FIRST job... You don't have a whole lot of bargaining power at this point.... And it's NOT the ONLY job you will ever have in your lifetime. You can change jobs!
