I get a lot of Mexico-related email for posting my address on this forum, as I'm sure many others do. Lately, I've been getting a lot of bizarre emails and PMs asking me/complaining about recruiters. It got me wondering just how many there are for Mexico.
I'm told that most recruiters work by PM. Sounds reasonable. I can count 3, though one hasn't been on here in awhile. I get the impression there are quite a few more.
Thoughts? |

Long time lurker, finally signed up. CWC pitched to me by PM shortly after my first post. He seems to be definitely a recruiter or school owner. Haven't had any others creep out of the shadows. |

I sometimes wonder if lots of readers think many regular posters on Dave's are involved with hiring and job placement. I've received PMs and emails -- some emails with CVs attached -- asking me if I have openings at my school. If I had anything to do with hiring at the university where I work, or any other school for that matter, I'd hire myself for a much better paying position than I currently have. |

All the recruiters are doing is making me incredibly suspicious. As a result, I cannot decide on a program, because I just assume half of them are trying to rip me off.
After my first post I received PMs telling me about some job in some small Mexica town with some small family saying that if I went it'd be on "good faith" ... but there were no, official details, at all. Not like, anything about the school.

Lilli, you asked about the openings at my school. I did not pitch to you. I told you that we are full for 2006-07. Post the PM and prove me wrong. You are a liar. |

CWC,
If you are full for 2006-2007 why did you ask me when I come down for an expense paid interview?

I, too, in my embarassing naievtay, was quickly asked for a resume by cwc. He said he ran the languge department at a school in Campeche, and was hiring for the next school year. Now that I've been around and read more of what he has to say, I wish I had kept my insta-trust in check and my resume to myself. Lesson learned. Also I'm not sure if that's how you spell naievetay. Damn it. |

Recruiting is not the purpose of this forum.
When I first signed up, I listed my position, and was asked specically by Dave, to not recruit. Truth is, I have more than enough applicants, anyway. I am in Playa del Carmen, not Ciudad del Carmen. The difference being that we don't need to recruit.
I do get a lot of ESL junk mail, now. I just delete it, along with the *beep* enlargement spams. |

Lets not get nasty.
It is underhanded for recruiters to search for prospective employees by pm?
I do not have the experience to make an informed reply. Perhaps they search through our posts for new hires the way fisherman net schools of fish in known habitats.
By what ever way initial contact is made - there are basics to cover (still learning).
The rule of thumb is to negotiate and have as much as possible in writing with a letter of employment outlining your responsibilities, duties and hours of work. The letter should also contain your salary and benefits the institute is offering
Does this sound ok so far?
Pick a region or sate that interests you. Try to get feed back when possible from present or past employees (ha-ha) at the schools you are negotiating with. Mexican expectations and appreciation of teachers varies from locale-just beware of really smooth operators-
do not worry and trust, me promises!
If possible physically check out where you be working. I have had to take positions blindly and have regretted it from day one.

I have no qualms about anyone recruiting me here. Feel free- it does wonders for my ego! I do have issues with people misrepresenting themselves in order to sell me questionable services, but honesty will get your foot in the door, so to speak.
For pete's sake, though, some of us really need a job! (or at least a better job) Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater! Caveat Emptor!
PS It can be spelled Naivety or navety or in French, naivet.

Me neither: if anyone out there is offering a teaching job in Mexico that pays more than 13,000 pesos a month, give me a shout. |

Cdaniels, you never did come by for a visit, when you were here. That conversation could have led somewhere. |
