| William, I've read a couple of your posts about the Beijing job market. I agree with what you say about the downward trend in pay. Honestly, it sounds like it's time for you to move onto something else. |

In my opinion, RMB 150 should be the minimum rate for any somewhat self-respecting teacher in big cities, such as Beijing or Shanghai. For corporate training (business English), I think RMB 200 to 250 would be closer to the mark.

It all comes down to respect and mutual cooperation. Isn't that what the contracts start out with in the first place? "We blah blah in mutal cooperation blah blah."
The fact that they want me to teach a business English class to a room full of billionaires and then pay me 200 RMB an hour is silly.
They shouldn't try to make so much money off teachers .
True, its fair game but its still silly. |

What's "self-respect" to do with pay in a foreign country?
Isn't "respect" somehow linked to certain intrinsic criteria and values? How on Earth can you say you are "respecting" yourself just because you are here and need a job?
And those students in offices are not "billionaires". Most of them are lowly staff paid a few thousand kuai. |

For native English speakers the concept surrounding respect although having its roots closely linked with both the spiritual and worldly, was rather corrupted by that nasty German Fellow Mr. Marx! You know that blaggard who had the effrontery to suggest that we sell our labour for a respectable wage with respect to profit made by our employer, so we ourselves could tend the worldly in a personally satisfying manner while giving the personal spirit a decent dose of self-respect. I think this concept is unaltered regardless of what part of the globe you find yourself
But then in your native tongue Roger maybe self-respect has a whole other meaning - please enlighten us |
