Very true about Istanbul but you cannot compare being single as you are with being married with kids.

I wasn't. I was comparing with other single or cohabiting childless colleagues.

As a single child I have no others to compare, however my cousin approximates a brother. He's a carpenter-So, Will, I would naturally be inclined to think of that as "working class",but without getting too picky, I'd toss him up a rung as he has, in my opinion, a surplus income.I believe he makes about 60,000 CDN a year AND 20,000 of that is paid "under the table". His wife, without anything beyond high school, worked her way up at Toronto Blue Jays organization( a sport team), and she does "special events" and pulls in about 70,000 a year. They both pay quite a few taxes and expenses, and give the impression that they are barely getting by.I was talking with a few lads from Cork recently, and asked them about the housing prices in Dublin(mentioned in my original posting), and they were saying that a house in a good part of Dublin is beyond middle class expectations.I have another cousin an hour outside of London, and he seems to be getting by as a banker on 100,000 pound a year.To me, they seem rather lofty for "middle-class/upper-middle-class",but to hear them talk...

Being from CB, you're probably acquainted with the term 'poor-mouthing'...sounds like that's what those folks are doing. I never did understand poor-mouthing. For those not from CB, that would be people who make good money but are always claiming poverty.

I am definitely in the wrong 'profession'. It seems most Canadians are doing much better financially than I am! Laughing

Perhaps when I complete my Master's degree, I'll be able to acquire a salary that will put me in the "middle-class". Laughing

I didnt think that money had much to do with class! In england i have a feeling (no statistics to back me up though) that the working classes outstrip the average middleclasses economically. A plumber, electrician, carpenter will earn around 3-500 pounds a week after their apprentices...now think the same thing for the normal graduate 180-350 pounds.
From my own experiences i was always termed middle-class not by the money i had but how i spent it!
I think that a majority of people now entering TEFL will definately be middle-class, university educated, gauche-caviares not content with beaver-espana or magamuff!

Carpenters don't earn anything like that kind of money.

Joiners (carpenters) do make a fortune here now, they're up there with plumbers. There has been a shortage of both for a few years and anyone with a good reputation can earn loads.

No, a good carpenter can earn 150 pounds a day tops.

Apparently in Ontario "middle class" is around 50 thousand in a double income household, but that's according to my rents who make 3 to 4 times that and still complain about having no money. I wouldn't know since I never had a job in Canada.

That's probably 50 thousand after tax, and it depends on your standard of living.

So you mean 300 pounds a week isn't possible at this rate? Do carpenters have a one day work week? Gosh, Thrifty, that's better than tefling.

Of course it is better than TEFLing. Remember the old adage:

A trade is worth as much as an estate.
