I applied to a couple of eikaiwas listing my MA in Appiled Linguistics and teaching experience. No response.

I applied to the same eikaiwas under a different name leaving out my MA and teaching experience. 'We are pleased to invite you for an interview.'

Morons.

Don't you think that's to be expected? I mean, you can't expect McDonald's to consider hiring experienced French chefs to flip burgers.

Foreign trainers dont want to hire some one that is more qualified than them and makes them look ignorant.

Someone with an MA is probably not teachable anyway and not a team player. They think they know better than the school how to teach their students.

Not sure if this was GEOS policy but a certain branch was telling prospective students that all their teachers had MA's in TEFL/Applied Linguistics.

Another thing you often hear is 'it's hard to get qualified teachers.'

Wonder if students would care that eikaiwas go out of their way not to employ qualified teachers?

Somebody who has spent 20 grand on a graduate degree is drowning in student loans doesnt want to come and work here for $10 an hour at GEOS. They want something that will pay them what they think they are worth and they will be appreciated for.

NOVA pays you 5,000 yen a month extra if you have a Masters.

Quite a few do, it's a foot in the door.

Easier to get a university job whilst in Japan with a visa isn't it? Eikaiwas seem the easiest way.

Do any uni's hire from abroad?

I was looking at a few uni jobs. Salary was 322,000 a month plus a research allowance and a few other things, travel etc.

Is that about right for a university?

The chance of getting hired abroad for a uni position is slim to none. You've got to invest a bit of cash and make the rounds in person. That's why eikaiwa are a necessary evil.

I have seen one that is hiring non-Japan residents but its part time. they want someone with a PhD and NO Japan experience.

Pay is based on age experience qualifications and whether its public or private. Research allowance varies also.

Which one? There are 700 of them in Japan.

So the starting salaries vary widely between universities?
