But, my orginal point seems to be lost; how many illegal immigrants are going to be in a club?
I would opine probably none unless they are working there, so in that case just card the staff  . |

None of which you refer to. "Silly"; if you're going to raid a club frequented by foreigners, take an interpreter.
If you're learning English at school; LISTEN. If you aspire to be a salaryman you may have to deal with English speakers. Or do policemen realise at elementary school that they will never reach the dizzy heights of becoming a salaryman, and instead perfect their bicycle-riding skills in preperation for chasing gaijin?
"Naive". In a country where English is THE 2nd language, might be a good idea to learn a smattering.

Canuck, you've been in Japan too long methinks.Take a step back and see the absurdity of conducting a raid and not have the nouse to take along an interpreter to try and achieve a quicker, but more thorough result without further antagonising 'guests' in the country you call home..... |

This is a false statement. English is NOT the second language of Japan.
There is only one official language of Japan: Japanese! |

Sorry to kick a dead dog, but at what point were people not allowed to exit the premises? You said it was highly unorganized and I was just wondering if people were bailing when they saw what was going down.

This shows that they weren't too keen on this withchunt and were probably proded into it by some local big wigs..
Good news when you've lost your gaijin card!! I know from experience...
Anyways, if not for English conversation, and, or displaying mutli-cultural tendencies, the Japanese police certainl yare good for dirrections.
They also have a wonderful minshuku room reservation service when you rollinto a small town after city hall is closed..
If it makes you feel any better, the local police around here are always getting into criminal trouble themselves or flouting traffic regulations all the while not really enforcing the law..
But they don't bother gaijin! |

There is no second official language. There's just Japanese.
