I have tried to do that (a bit!) and children's lit is a good way to go! Where (in DF) is a good place to find children's lit (meaning good selection and good pricing)?

Someone once told me that reading Harry Potter in Spanish is also a good way to learn the language...I started reading it the other day but as I borrowed it from the school library, I have stopped until I can buy my own copy as I want to underline/write in the text! |

generally speaking... when I am in mexico city, it's briefly (on the way north or south)... so I don't really know the city.

If you're looking for english language literature though, I did a search in seccionamarilla and there's a distributor called dabsa (distribuidora american book SA)... I don't know what their selection is, but their information is the following:

Calle: CONSTITUYENTES 920

Colonia: LOMAS ALTAS

Codigo postal: 11950

Estado: DISTRITO FEDERAL

Poblacion: MIGUEL HIDALGO

Tel : (55)5259-5800

Tel/Fax : (55)5570-0169

Or you can check their website... www.dabsa.com.mx

If you want something with a little more substance and more challenging... try Canasta de cuentos mexicanos by B. Traven. Not a native speaker of the language I don't believe, so a lot of tenses are pretty simple, and it's all pretty straightforward and from a western (northern?) perspective.

Best of luck. |

Consider spanish language books. There's enough cognates that you can probably understand a lot of children's literature with a 501 verbs book and really build an amazing vocabulary in Spanish quickly if you give the literature in that language a chance. Don't listen to anyone if they tell you Borges is easy, though. |

I do read in Spanish, just not very quickly. I often read the newspapers, though that's partly to get some decent news about Mexico. There's not much available in English that I'm aware of. I also read the bbc site in Spanish. But for relaxation after work, I read in English. Spanish is still work and I don't mind that, but sometimes I just need to relax. |

I feel the same about reading in Spanish. I read in English to gather gobs of info or for pleasure, and in Spanish when I need a local source of info. It's still a bit of work.

I've been using eBay to get English books sent to me...haven't found the widest variety available here. |

I've got the maple syrup if you bring the pancakes! hehhee

But I did find a large jug at costco when I was there....REAL maple syrup...none of that **** that has the 'sabor de maple' (ugh!) I didn't buy it though as I lugged one down here. Also, I bought a large block of white chedder there. Just finished it off and am wishing that the taxi ride to Costco wasn't so long as I find most of the cheese I do have around me isn't quite as flavourful. As for the hockey tape and timmy's......I'm still lookin'! |

				| I would like to say I play futbol, go to the gym, study Spanish, and travel a lot. Those would all be lies. I have good excuses for not doing any of those activities, but those would all be lies too. When I'm not teaching I like to procrastinate grading papers, watch mindless TV, and SLEEP!!!!!!! |
