Last I heard Buckland the school in Yangshuo has gone bankrupt some time ago. (not talking about the recruiter though, plenty of info on him elsewhere)
Anyway that school wasn't a very nice place to work at from what I've gathered from most people I know that tried it.

Other yanghuo schools will offer about 2500 to 3000 for 25 hours a week. not bad really if youre looking for a free holiday. i know some signs do promise 4000 a month, but i havent met anyone that actually got that. for summer schools it might be different btw.

Guilin has got some good places to work at though, but salaries wont be high. hours are such that you can get other gigs in evenings and weekends though, and if its scenery you want, its what youll find here.

sichuan province is great btw. chengdu is beautiful and you can get away easily to some really cool places. (dont go to panzihua though)
also hunan is a great place for those who are more inclined to take the off beaten paths.

just go somewhere, and if you like it, find a job and stay. its that easy.

I suppose I could, as some people have suggested, work in Korea and save up some serious cash then do a nice long tour of China. My friend is in Korea teaching, and he makes 7k (USD) every 1.5 months. The only downside is that Korea is very boring (from what I've heard).

I suppose that saving 20-30k USD in Korea is a reality. Having 30k USD after a year (as opposed to saving 5-10k by counting nickles and dimes (or whatever the chinese equivelent is) could result in a very nice tour of China's beautiful scenic areas. I imagine, with the wages you earn in China, you probably don't have alot of cash to do a scenic tour of china, especially if you want to save anything at all.

And I'm still not sure how much time I would have to travel the nice landscapes if I taught in Shanghai, since the nice places are all quite far in the southwestern provinces.

Teaching in Gulin , Yangshuo, or Chengdu is also a possibility, though I will be much much poorer.

Even xi jie prices are really cheap compared to western bars/restaurants in most major chinese cities...

Panzhihua - Voldermort
Recently I had a long an enjoyable catchup meal with some long term friends of mine who have been FT's in China since the 90's. The stories they have told me about your beloved Panzhihua and your No 3 school leave a lot to be desired. Obviously you are unaware of some of the rorts that are going on there. The Chinadian chap who has a past longer than your arms and has finally wound his way to Panzhihua via many other Sichuan cities is obviously still causing havoc!!! My friends were lucky enough to be warned off by friends they have in the PSB gained after many years of dealing with the PSB all over the country, from what they said the Chinadian has now run foul of some of his local mentors and is now suffering the consequences.
Good luck with your negotiations with a new contract.

I'm sure you can appreciate that there is very little I can say on the matter. I have already been warned about posting on these forums.

My contract is up for renewall soon, and to be honest, I really cannot see Chinadian chap giving me a fair deal. Infact I would go as far to say that the he will perform the same old routine of "you are a bad teacher", "the students don't like you", "the school can't afford what you ask"... This year though I am not going to stand for it.

In defence of the school itself, there is absolutely no problem. The headmasters, teachers and even the students have looked after me very well. Any problem, little or small, is solved in a matter of hours.

There is a fairly good chance I will be making a move to a larger city such as Chengdu this year.

Hi there,

nice to know you're enjoying Panzihua voldermort. I didn't very much, and if i had a choice i'd go to pretty much any other city in Sichuan.

So if someone asks me about scenery, i'd recommend Sichuan, except for that place because it's just a bit drab and all stretched out along the river taking you ages to get around the place.

Anyway, good luck with the school situation. And what's that bit about having been warned not to write on this forum? Is it that guy to referred to?
