Let's be honest about it Muji... the main reason you're coming here is for the women.
I can't really blame him for being hesitant to admit it though... anyone that comes on these boards and says that women are one of the main benefits of living here is labelled a pervert. It's just as good as any other reason to come... Japanese women are great - it's one of the reasons that I'm here. There, I said it.
And the truth will set you free! |

Muji my son,
It's not perverted for a young man to be interested in young women. That's a distortion we hear bandied around all too often. It's the most natural thing in the world.
All I'm suggesting is that you slow down a little bit. It's clear that you are excited about coming to Japan and that's great. I hope you have a wonderful time. However, I suggest that if you arrive in Kyoto with your suitcase in one hand and your nudger in the other then things might not go so well for you. You don't want to get a reputation for being a sexual predator, do you? Well then, be cool Muji.
You're going to have a whole heap of other issues to deal with when you first get here anyway. Things like learning the language and learning to be an effective teacher which is going to come as a slap in the face to you.
You most probably will find a girlfriend here but as another poster has said: wait and see what happens. |

Hahaha! It's so far from the truth I can't even explain. Bugger it - not worth it.
You guys are an odd bunch here, that's for sure. But thankyou all, I've learned everything I wanted to know. Also, never heard the word nudger used as a euphemism before - that one made me chuckle so thank you. |

| Can anyone tell me if I try to apply for a job with Nova from the UK (or the other big 4), will I be able to choose where I get posted? Any idea which company has the most outlets in Kyoto? |
You don't get to choose anything. You get to REQUEST where you'd like to be posted. If they figure you have a good enough reason AND if they have a vacancy there, you MIGHT get it. They don't promise anything.

| Also, hypothetically if I did break contract after spending a few months with Nova, would that have any impact on my work visa? Or does it stay valid until the expiry date regardless? |
You have NOT read everything here, or else you would know that breaking a contract does not affect your visa. It is yours until it expires.

| Any idea if it's possible to work part time for Nova? |
Sure, but you won't get a work visa sponsored that way. Nor for any place that hires you PT.

| I quit drinking alcohol about a year ago, and I'm fairly set in that. I'm not going to drink again, so could this potentially make me a social outcast there? How big is the drinking culture? In the UK I find being a non-drinker makes it harder to socialise with a select type of people, but has no effect with others. Similar thing in Japan? |
Maybe it's on another forum but this gets asked a lot, too. Drink as you like (or not). People will get used to you. Many of us don't drink here. Many do.[/quote] |

I drink very lightly and have ruffled a few feathers. Address it politely and resolutely. People who can't handle it are free to let it ruin their evening.
I suggest not making a Japanese girlfriend a priority. Although a local girl can accelerate your learning, you've seen in your other other relationships that there's more to be considered. |

| I don't understand why anyone should be given a hard time for being interested in alcohol and women. If they are of no interest to you then perhaps Saudi Arabia would be a better place to seek employment. The salaries tend to be higher there. |

Just weighing in with my 2 cents. The girls here are fantastic, but it takes a while to find one (at least a decent one). I have some friends here who do quite well in their home countries who have been here for months before landing a good girlfriend. So don't expect girls to flock to you. There are many foreigners here in Japan, though it doesn't often feel like it. Don't forget about the language barrier either. Knowing or not knowing Japanese will really effect who/how many people you will be able to date.
I wish you luck here in Japan, but chances are you will be working a lot and the girls do too, so if that is your main focus you may end up being unhappy here. |

| Thankyou Chris, that's very helpful. Being happy, learning the language and integrating with the culture are all my true aspirations - having a local girlfriend just tend to help all these things in my experience. |

These people that give him a hard time probably also haunt or at least once haunted Roppongi or Shinsaibashi or the equivalent for, er, lady friends and booze. |

| I think the poster that was obsessed with Ayumi Hamasaki and expected to come to a comic book world of Kitty Chan delights was more entertaining than Mr Wantsex. |
