I know the usual gripes about money will come out but I suspect it is more than that. I would like to hear the other reasons from you guys. Is it lifestyle, the work, the country? What?

I believe there are many people interested in teaching there but "Los Jefes" that do the hiring seem to automatically exclude non-British speakers of English regardless of how qualified they are.

If Malaysia doesn't have enough qualified foreign teachers, this just might be contributing to the problem.

They don't have to pay high salaries to foreigners because there are plenty of qualified local English speakers to do the teaching.

Yes I know they can get local teachers....and they don't earn much either.

I wouldn't like to try and recruit for Malaysia, I have stated on this forum in the past, Malaysia really is a trully 'hidden gem' in the tefl world. Most people think of Malaysia has a Muslim country, just good for beach holidays, and Thailand over shadows it for fun and experience in most peoples minds.

We know that not to be true of course.....

But the salaries are silly. Really....

In BKK, judging from www.ajarn.com, experienced teachers get 4500 ish rm (45,000 bhat) plus, and I reckon life is a bit cheaper up there, just a bit, food and stuff, alcohol maybe, Hod is better placed to give a comparison on that...

If the money was better I would have stayed there and probably stayed 4ever....

Oh of course! Why didn't I think of that? After all smoking a bit of ganja is such a serious offence and should be punished by death.
So if I told you that gays are executed in Iran, you'd say don't be gay (I'm not)if you work there?

What I was implying, is that some of us are put off by a country that openly advertises the death penalty for merely partaking in the smoking of a herb. Such laws point to a draconian judicial system - not very attractive to a lot of westerners. Whether or not I smoke spliffs is not the point.

They aren't going to execute you for smoking weed. I always read about raids on clubs where they make all the people give pee samples. They are looking for much harder drugs like E and coke. Considering the frequency of these raids, I doubt the penalty is severe.

If you're busted trafficking, that's a different matter. However, I suspect the vast majority of foreigners who are executed are from Thailand or Myanmar.

Here is a list of Australians who have been executed. Notice that none are for possession. Also notice the dates of execution. Please consider that Australia isn't so far from Malaysia, so I suspect Aussies have the highest execution toll for Western countries. Finally, notice the drug involved in all cases.
