As Shan Shan says, it's about being in control and showing who the boss is. It's also to dispell the myth that foreign teachers' classes are easy without having to put in any effort. The older the students are, the more of a tough MFSOB I am to them. In the end, they respect me more than they fear me because they know I am serious about teaching them, and not there to make a few RMB from their parents.
I had a student coming over this afternoon and during our chat, he told me about his first FT who often had attendance of under 20 students (out of 40-something students) because the students hated him. He could talk non-stop for 40 minutes and students would leave during his lesson and he wouldn't care. It didn't help when he talked a lot about Taiwan independance and telling his students that they were more stupid than pigs, or swore in Chinese at them. |

And students still showed up? The FT swearing in Chinese must have been amusing, kind of like how a soju-fueled Korean man venting his anger against the injustices of this world brings laughter to those all around...

OP when I read your post I thought, what is the problem, then I reread it and you have to mark the student for attendence.
My gut feeling is, I would mark her on her English ability and I really would not care if she attended class. Also if her English is much better than her peers she probably thinks it's a waste of time, as you try to teach differing levels of English competency, I know I would.
Why should class attendence be important when the bottom line is the student's ability, whether she learns from you or by herself. Isn't the outcome the most important.
I have had the experience of students not attending classes and passing and their English was abysmal and the other students attendied and they were both passed. That really pissed me off.
Give her the mark she deserves. |

If I follow your logic, the B student who does not show up should be awarded a B at the end of the semester. Is that right?
If the student is so far ahead of the class, then he should be required to demonstrate his ability throughout the grading term. Perhaps some classes hold little interest for those with advance skills. That should not exempt them from attending classes and doing something a lot more challenging.
Or perhaps there should be an honorary grading system.
